Some say that the mark of a good Taiwanese restaurant is the sanbeiji (three cup chicken), and we are big fans of the way they do it at Good Old Days. For RMB68, you get a big serving of tender chicken chunks braised in a concoction of soy sauce, sesame oil and rice wine. The chicken cooks in the sauce until it’s reduced to a thick and savory glaze and it all comes to your table sizzling hot with a tangle of fragrant basil on top and surprising jewels of candy-sweet garlic cloves hidden throughout. The richly reduced sauce is delicious when mixed with a bowl of steamed rice (RMB5). The other menu items deliver standard, traditional fare (think fried rice, dumplings and pineapple cake) in a cozy shikumen setting with a hint of ’30s glamour.
