Set in the newly opened Anfull Court, Sunflour Bakery & Café serves freshly baked breads and casual but hearty meals.

The breakfast menu is small but enticing. Croissants start at RMB9, danishes are RMB13 and more substantial egg plates range from RMB35-65. We started with a basket of warm croissants; they are perfectly flaky and and sinfully buttery, needing no additional spreads. The slivered almond dusted variety (RMB12) is our favorite.

The sunny side up organic eggs served on farmhouse bread with bacon (RMB35) is a classic breakfast, and the plate offered at Sunflour does not disappoint. The farmhouse bread is earthy and yeasty, though could have stayed on the grill a little longer to become crispier.

For a larger, more rustic start to the day, the English breakfast (RMB65) offers diners something really substantial. A huge plate of bacon, sausage, eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, spinach and a grilled tomato completely fill up the plate. On the lighter and quicker side, Sunflour freshly blends 16-ounce fruit smoothies ranging from RMB25-40 that pack a lot of zip—especially the berry berry and banana republic.

The sunny café fills early and quickly on the weekends with young French Concession couples trying to navigate their baby strollers in the cramped space. The best tables in the house are the two outside on the sidewalk, perfect for a morning coffee and pastry on these comfortable fall mornings.

Our rating: 4/5
