MY PEEPS: Andy Xue | Fortune Connection Club (FC Club)
Guanxi, Baby
What does "FC" stand for? In the beginning, it stood for "fortune cookie," but not everybody had an overseas background and we had to explain what a "fortune cookie" was, so we decided to change it to "fortune connection." Do you think that networking plays a big part in advancing one's career? Most often, people network through friends, not so much in this sort of public event. By having this ongoing focus on career advancement, a lot of doors are opened. So, guanxi is good. Definitely. This is part of the Chinese culture, in Chinese blood. If you have guanxi, people treat you differently. Do you think people attend your events to gain guanxi? Absolutely. I regularly hear of people obtaining a new career or new positions from our events. Sometimes afterward, when people are ready to find a new position, they come back. The club hosts events directed at certain industries, like media, finance and more. Do you think this is more effective than hosting an open event? In the past, we didn't have this and what we found was that when people gather from industries across the board, there is not as much in common between them and thus not as much to talk about. Having an industry focus really provides some common ground where people can get more guanxi in the industries they work in. What should one attending these events bring? Mentally, if coming for career development, you should have something in mind in terms of what kind of career you want. For other events, just have an open mind and a good time. Physically, having your mingpian is a plus. Every guanxi exchange starts with the exchange of mingpian. And we also have a lucky draw at every event. We take it you get a lot of mingpian. Well, at every event we have an average of 150 people, so I get that many every time. That's a whole lot of guanxi!
