MY PEEPS: Chris Showalter | Community Center Shanghai
Tour de Community
What, in your opinion, is the best way to give back to the local community? Involve yourself in something that you are passionate about-children, the environment, whatever. So getting involved is one of the keys to a successful stay in Shanghai then? Getting connected to the community is important-learning to manage stress, being clear about the challenges and opportunities in the city. We offer tours, language, culture and cooking classes and charity opportunities to help expats make the most of their time here. You run regular tours of the Metro and we noticed that you recommend people bring an umbrella, are you expecting it to rain inside? [Laughs] It was only a reminder. If it's raining you might want an umbrella for when you go outside, we are not predicting that it will rain inside, no. We're pretty familiar with the subway. What do your tours provide that we couldn't get wandering around by ourselves? Our tours are all run by expats who know the area, they help you find places that we know expats who are new to the city will enjoy. People make friends on our tours-Cthey're small groups and you get to know each other well. The cooking courses seem like another good way to meet new people. Yes, in the cooking classes the chef demonstrates the techniques and then everyone enjoys the food together. Ever have problems with beginners starting fires in the kitchen? [Laughs] No. Phew. Well, it sounds like a delicious time. Maybe you should come attend one of the classes!
