My Peeps: Ulrike Sohl | German Club Shanghai
Social Schnitzels
Tell us about the German Club. The German Club Shanghai is a non-profit association concentrating on German families (we have about 350-400 member families). Mainly women take part in our daytime events but we also offer some events in the evening and during weekends. Any big events planned this year? We're celebrating our 10th anniversary with a big party at Kathleen's 5. It's a dance party with a DJ, 80s and 90s music and a buffet. What other activities are there? Most important is our monthly Coffee Morning. Additionally there is a monthly Newcomer Meeting-a service for people moving to Shanghai that provides a lot of vital information. Other activities are walking tours, holiday trips, bowling or dancing lessons. Have you ever received any great tips about Shanghai at your events? I'm usually the one giving the tips! We gather information about shopping, new restaurants, everything interesting about coming to Shanghai, so that's our job. So then tell us, what are the best German restaurants in town? We have Papa's Bierstube which is well-known, on Hongmei Lu. It's good, a bit expensive but it's good. Paulaner is also very good. What are the best items on the menu? At Papa's, all the schnitzels, and the beer at Paulaner. That's what Germans miss the most here-beer. Aside from finding the best beer, what do Germans in Shanghai do best? We manage to be on time to all meetings, despite the traffic here. No one in China is as punctual as Germans-we try to be there before, not after.
