MY PEEPS: X Marks the Spot

Christy Lin | YANA Shanghai Treasure Hunt
Why start a treasure hunt in Shanghai? To discover the real Shanghai, to let the players discover the hidden parts of Shanghai and to see the city in a whole new light. To experience real Shanghai culture, art and people, to build up team spirit ... and to just simply have a fun afternoon filled with laughter and sweat! Where did the idea come from? We came up with the idea after hearing so many foreign friends and clients say that they can't find fun things to do in Shanghai that don't involve eating and hanging out in bars. Can you give us an example of the types of clues you give people? Our treasure hunts are tailored to the audience, but do not require familiarity with the area to be successful. Solving clues can call upon a variety of skills including knowledge of current events, pop culture and literature, street smarts, simple logic, research skills and teamwork. Some clues are easy, a few are difficult and many are in-between, giving players a variety of intellectual challenges. What do they do if they can't figure out where to go? If players cannot figure out where to go they can always call us for directions. However, for each call points are deducted from the team score. The goal is to help introduce people to unique areas of the city. What are some places that you send participants to? The Suzhou Creek area, the Jewish quarter and the small lanes... you know, places where you can see locals wearing pajamas on street. And at each location, teams must complete a challenge, right? Yes. What are some tasks that you have participants do? The tasks are funny but challenging and are things that you may experience if you were Shanghainese. For example, you may have to find a stinky tofu vendor in Yu Garden, then make your own tofu and sell it. Aiya! Can you tell us what the "treasure" is? The "treasure" is not something tangible, just the great experience you receive.
