Hot on the heels of one year without shoes, Arthur Jones tells us how his feet fared in the city streets.
Do you have your shoes back on?
Yes, I finished the project two weeks ago and I have my shoes on right now.
So you managed the entire year with no shoes?
The only exception was for legal reasons. I work in a production company, so when shooting on a construction site, I had to put them on.
What are you up to next?
The footage from my year is in the can, but I’m not sure when I’ll have time to cut it. I’m also working on a book based on my diary from the year, as well as photos and detailed recordings.
When did you start?
I started in the summertime of 2010, so it was quite easy apart from the pavement being hot, but the winter was really tough. I travelled a lot in Norway, England and Germany. The cold can be a drag.
Did you have any serious injuries?
Most of them were pretty simple. But usually, I’d get home and ram my foot into the end of the bed. Most people think it would be pretty dangerous because of their expectations of China. People assume you’ll get things like warts and athlete’s foot, but you don’t.
How did your understanding of distances and surfaces change?
You start to remember surfaces, feels. Instead of remembering a smell or sound, you remember the feel.
Will you keep going without shoes?
I’ll keep doing it. Shoes are a tool and I’ll use them selectively.
