We caught up Carol Hoag from the Baobei Foundation. She told us all about charitable organization and why we need to get to their upcoming charity dinner this weekend.

What’s the Baobei Foundation?
Baobei means “precious child.” Four women started it almost three years ago after another large orphan-care organization out of the US decided not to do gastrointestinal or neurological surgeries in Shanghai anymore. We sort of took over where they left off, but with a lot of changes. We work with Shanghai doctors at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center to provide surgery to Chinese orphans born with such birth defects.

And what’s the Warm Your Heart Dinner?
It’s a dinner to be held on Feb. 19 at the NAPA Wine Bar & Kitchen. FIELDS will donate high-quality, in-season ingredients, and chef Matthew Ona from NAPA will show off his great cooking talent by creating food masterpieces. The wine dinner will be a great event with all proceeds going to Baobei. The money will go to saving the lives of orphans born with these critical birth defects. One surgery costs RMB42,000, on average.

Sounds like others are happy to help out.
We’re so grateful to Steve Liang of FIELDS and Chef Matthew. They are the best type of supporters because they are personally moved by our work. They actually approached me and asked how they could help. It is so rare to find businesses who really want to give to the kids without worrying about their own profit. I hope this will be a great example of charity to other Shanghai restaurants and businesses. Charity, by definition, should be sacrificial.

Do you have other events coming up?
We always have events going on. We’ll have an anniversary dinner in March and a big farmers’ market event at the Intercontinental Expo in May.
