Spring is here which means that it's time to get outdoors and get fit. Kick start your fitness routine with the whole family at the Jinqiao 8K race. We caught up with Concordia teacher Scott Murphey to find out more about the fun run.

How did you first find out about this race?
I think it was actually through one of the local magazines. I thought it was a really great idea because I like to run, and when I found out it was actually going to be in my neighborhood, I thought maybe I could bring my whole class. So, for three years, I’ve run with them. I like getting them and their families involved.

That must be cute!
It’s fun, pure fun. We always start sort of together, but some go really fast and get really tired and start walking while others try to run the whole thing. It’s really interesting for me because I can always go back and forth to check out some of my students and enjoy the fact that everybody is having fun.

What are you guys going to wear on race day?
That’s the cool thing. We’re actually going to make our own shirts. We will come up with the design and then have shirts made. Last year we had a tiger design because it was the year of the tiger. It’s easy for others to tell that we are from the same group and it helps to keep the kids safe.

What’s the best thing about the race?
It’s the biggest annual event for this community. We all live in and around this neighborhood. I like the fact that it’s something they made to fit Jinqiao, an area with a lot of families and kids. Apart from the regular 8km race, there’s also a 2km race, which is pretty short, so it’s easier to get kids involved and have fun. This is all about camaraderie and it helps bring people in this community closer. It’s like a carnival, and they have a lot of activities throughout the day for spectators. People who run in this race don’t really care that much about getting first prize. For most, the prize is the fun we have when we go outside and do this together.
