We chat to Gelin Casa Director Vivian Wei about here eco-friendly business. She tells us how to save the planet and save cash with green interior design.

Are Chinese consumers becoming more aware of eco-friendly products?
We are beginning to see hints of this growing trend in our daily lives. While brands are increasingly assuming an eco-friendly ethic for their latest products, consumers are becoming more aware. I can tell you from our own experience that more customers inquire about what materials are good for their health and their children. As living standards improve in China, this awareness will become real action to decrease toxic materials in the home.

How can companies save money, time and the planet by making eco-friendly products?
This is not easy to do in the early stages but, in the long-term, eco-friendly considerations will pay off. “Save the planet” should not only be a slogan, it should be a common duty for all of us. We can start with some deep thinking about our basic needs, what can be re-used and whether the things we use will be a burden to others. Considering these points creates win-win situations for both companies and consumers.

How would you describe your style to readers?
We are still exploring. For interiors, we learn from Shanghai’s historical buildings, using a lot of reclaimed wood to capture that Old World feeling. In offices, we like a cool, neutral, calming loft-like feel. It is our duty to collect elements and put them in the right place. Ideally our designs should embody “eco-friendly,” “functional” and “personal” spirits simultaneously.

What artists, architects, places or periods have influenced your work the most?
Ieoh Ming Pei, our nation’s architect. We have lots to learn from his works and spirit; Hans J. Wegner, a Danish cabinet-maker who said “I’m only a carpenter who knows a little more about design,” and Coco Chanel, who perfected her own style to a tee.
