Morry Morgan, the founder of ClarkMorgan Corporate Training, released his first book "Selling Big to China" earlier this year. City Weekend caught up with him to talk a little bit about his experience and got some advice about how to do business in the world’s fastest-growing market.
Had you always planned on writing or did your experiences in China lead you in that direction?
After working as a corporate trainer for seven years I had so many anecdotes about working in China–particularly with respect to sales and negotiations–that it wasn’t difficult to find enough content. Finding the time to actually write it was the challenge.
What’s different about your take versus all the other experts out there?
I apply real China-centric cases to my theories. This is possible because I practice what I preach. If I have a hypothesis regarding a sales process, I can apply it to my own national sales team, and get rapid feedback on its effectiveness. Thankfully my sales team is not bashful with their opinions.
How do you see the business environment in China developing over the next decade?
In his book, The Coming Collapse of China, Gordon Chang predicted that the Chinese banks would cause the country to implode. Obviously he was very wrong, and I learned at that point not to make statements as to the future business environment of China. All I can say is that I hope both openness and transparency improve. I am weary of the “two step forward, one step back” approach to reform that has been demonstrated in the past decade.
What advice do you have for entrepreneurs starting out here?
I have a personal motto, which also applies to my company: REDS. Respect, Energy, Dynamism and Synergy. Respect everyone you meet (or do your damn best to do so!). Always give your full attention and passion (energy) to what you do and be prepared for change (dynamism). And finally, it is impossible to succeed alone. Build synergies within and outside your organization, and avoid burning bridges, as this city is surprisingly small.
Want to read the book for yourself? Head to Garden Books and grab a copy of "Selling Big to China" for RMB200.
Sounds like you have a bout of bitterness Phillip. I'm happy to report the company is doing well, regardless of rumors from grumpy old men. Nevertheless, thank you for your concern.
Bitterness? haha You're projecting. I have nothing to do with that organization and never have. And, you're being dishonest. No need to thank me, I have no concern for you, whoever you are.
Gentlemen, please stop fighting. Phillip I'm happy to report that ClarkMorgan Corporate Training is healthy and growing, and I have started listening to my staff. Evidence of this - my 'new' boss, the managing director, used to be my 'old' employee! And while I have your attention, I'm curious to know where all your angst against me comes from, since I don't recall ever meeting. I've clearly rubbed you the wrong way somewhere along our journey.

Didn't ClarkMorgan almost go bankrupt from mismanagement? It's just a shell of its former self. This is often the moment when people write their expert books. Perhaps, Morgan should have listened to his staff more than he wants us to believe. Personally, I wouldn't believe what this guy has to say.
