We chat with Brian Yang, the coordinator of Frexh, about this weekend’s event and find out how he's upping Shanghai’s culture quotient.
What is Frexh?
It’s a two-day showcase for international and Chinese emerging talents in the fields of music, fashion, food and art. It’s pronounced like the world “fresh.” We just put an “x” in it as a spin-off of xinxian, Chinese for fresh.
And what brought it to Shanghai?
I live here, so I see all the energy and enthusiasm of the city. Although sometimes there’s a bit of sensory overload, it’s a great place to try new things, which is what Frexh is all about.
Give us the low-down on the events.
On August 6 there’ll be bands, DJs, and fashion designers showcasing at MAO Livehouse. Several fashion designers, including Flora Lee, who’s about to open a boutique in Xintiandi, will be showing. The next day, there’s going to be a food and art exhibition at 5 on the Bund, the culinary part of which is being coordinated by Kelley Lee. Madison, The Apartment, the Bar at the Ritz-Carlton and Azul are just some of the restaurants presenting, from which people will be able to taste samples. Six artists will be exhibiting, including Monique Lai, a Jamaican-Chinese photographer and Phat Huynh, a painter from Ho Chi Minh City who does a lot of landscape art.
You used to host “Shanghai Rush.” How did you make the transition from media into this?
PaperDolls, a band I knew in New York who’ll be playing at MAO Livehouse, asked me for advice on touring in China. I really believed in their music so I wanted to help them out, not to mention that they have great style.
What do you think about the different looks that you see in Shanghai?
You have the urban, young, partying crowd that likes to enjoy life. You have good-looking people wearing fashion-forward clothing. Then there’s this entire other world full of local Shanghainese walking around in their pyjamas. Maybe for my next fashion production I can feature all pyjamas.
