Toffy stands for “Top Oriental Food For You” and indeed stands out from the pack of Thai restaurants in Shanghai, especially with a decor that evokes the classiest of island hotspots. They just need to improve service.
Toffy's tom yum soup (RMB78) rivals our current favorite, Coconut Paradise, with all the vibrant hot and sour flavors we love. The monstrously plump shrimp are no afterthought here. Among the other highlights were the charcoal grilled pork neck (RMB58), tender inside with a lovely crusty exterior well suited to its hot and garlicky dipping sauce, and a vegetable green curry (RMB48) that is a thin but rich dish full of eggplant, cauliflower, squash and broccoli. We were taken with the light sweetness; too many curries here are overwhelmed by coconut milk.
And on it goes. The three flavored fish (RMB118 for perch) is a classic Thai preparation and their version keeps the sweet, salty and sour flavors in a good balance, with a tamarind, palm sugar and fish sauce topping adorning the fish. The squid in lemon and chili sauce (RMB158) comes on a large rectangular sizzling hot plate and dazzles with flavors. One bite of squid and you can immediately taste lemon, coriander, celery, garlic and chili. One or two more bites in and more subtle fennel and kafir lime leaf start to dance on your taste buds. Toffy's made it onto our regular rotation.
