nicktheskateboarder

Hello, My name is Nick, and I've been living in Shanghai for the last year and a half. During working hours I'm a trainer for Disney English, and the rest of the time I'm skateboarding and dealing with injuries caused by skateboarding. While living here, I've had to go through two surgeries. One for a broken wrist and one for a problematic knee. Each of these surgeries were performed by the amazing team at the American Medical Center. My first injury occurred prior to moving here, I broke my wrist while skateboarding in New York City and had to have a titanium plate along with ten screws installed into my forearm. A few months after the surgery, I moved to Shanghai. This is where the fun began. My body reacted poorly to the titanium in my arm and started growing a weird looking growth directly above the surgical incision. I went to the Delta West Clinic to have it looked at. They were unable to take care of my problem, so they referred me to Dr. Kao at the American Medical Center. While at AMC, Dr. Kao introduced me to some of the most renowned doctors from America. She explained to me that they fly in regularly, stay for a few weeks to perform surgeries, and they they could take care of me. I placed my trust in Dr. Kao and I'm so happy that I did! The doctors came to the conclusion that I was having an allergic reaction to the titanium in my arm and that the plate and screws would need to be removed. In just a few short hours, that I thankfully don't remember, they successfully performed the surgery. My knee surgery was performed by the same doctor who performed knee surgery on President Clinton. The doctor discovered scar tissue that had adhered itself to my meniscus and was causing pain in every step that I took. This pain was present for a few years, but I never did anything about it, hoping that it would go away through regular exercise. A quick surgery, an overnight stay with Blue Frog for dinner in my recovery bed, and some of the nicest nurses that I've ever met, and I was out of there. Their in house physical therapist, Roger, worked me hard and helped me to strengthen my knee. He was really great about motivating me by giving me exercises that were engaging and challenging. He also took the time to massage and tape my knee after every session. Two months post surgery, the pain is gone and I'm skateboarding like I'm 15 again. Beyond all of this, the staff at AMC are friendly, caring, and all around wonderful people. I don't know what I would do without them. -Nick P.S. they have a fleet of Buicks that can pick you up at your apartment and take you home, and they have a really awesome espresso machine in the lobby. Best. Medical. Center. Ever.

I visited AMC after I incurred a serious ankle sprain while doing CrossFit. I am very active and consider sports and fitness a hugely important part of my lifestyle, so I had not been resting or taking enough time to heal, which only made the injury worse and frustrated me immensely. I met with physical therapist Roger, who I found to be friendly and approachable. He answered all my questions, showed me diagrams about the injury and took me through a series of icing, elevating and daily exercises that I would need to complete. It took time and dedication for me to follow his advice and get back in the gym, scaling back on any exercises that cause me pain. I'm still taking it easy on squatting or running, but my mobility is back and I'm getting stronger every day. I'm really thankful to the team at AMC for helping me get back into my fitness routine and would be happy to refer them to any active friends who want excellent Western standard medical care, particularly with regard to sports injuries.

AMC is a fantastic place for rehab! I had a total knee replacement done recently, and went to AMC for my post-op physical therapy. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. They made the workouts something to look forward to! The workout room is spotless and well-appointed. It was a pleasure going there. In addition, the support staff is courteous and tremendously efficient, whether dealing with insurance issues or just calling a cab for you after your workout. I could not think of a better place to go to help get back into great shape. Thank all of you so much!!

I was reffered to the AMC by a former employee and I went there because of chronic pain that had resulted from an accident, and from the moment I first called the quality of service has been pretty good. Everyone from the reception team to the vast variety of clinical proffesionals they employee are readily at your service. Even after spending a third of my life abroad attending fancy private hospitals, this one seems to be pretty great. Initial checks, consulation, aftercare, it's all covered swiftly and with no fuss. The physio seems to compare pretty well to private PT I've had in the UK. If your insurance can cover it, this seems to be THE place to go for any of your accident related needs. But I'll write another review if they can get me fully over my injury.

I was recommended AMC by a friend of mine, I visited them 2 times this week. First time was to meet their orthopedist due to a sport injury. That went well although I could feel that the doctor didn't have any time to lose during the consultation... This being said, the doctor was professional and knew what he was talking about. My second visit was to do physiotherapy. Their physiotherapist Roger took good care of me, after doing all our exercises he explained me which ones I should do at home. I left with 2 sheets of paper naming all the exercises - including drawing, number of repetitions and sets - I have to practice home, perfect as I would have certainly forgot half of them. They also lent me some ankle weights, something that wouldn't even happen back home. As some mentioned the prices are high, you better go there with a good insurance cover. But after being in Shanghai for 7 years and done a lot of expat hospitals, this visit finally made me feel that the significant amount of money I am throwing every months on insurance is worth something. In other hospitals I always felt like I was looked after by a western doctor or therapist that had to move to Asia in order to finally make a decent living or by a local doctor that wasn't really skilled and with whom communication was a struggle.

I don't know about other people - maybe they were lucky enough to get a good treatment, but I unfortunately have a bad experience. I wish the waiting area and their free drinks would actually translate into the professional services they offer. The doctor (I don't remember his name) was good enough, but then sent me straight to see the PT and from there it just got worse...There are few therapists there, I believe, and I was unlucky to be treated by Chinese-one. I am telling you - in Europe he would not be allowed to even come close to the patient and for sure not to the people with sport injuries. It didn't help at all, plus my PT had to be corrected by the foreign PT all the time, which makes me think he has no professional background at all. I am happy my insurance was good enough to cover the costs, otherwise I would feel absolutely ripped off. I don't recommend it and will definitely never go back there.

When I visited AMC on my initial consultation they were very friendly and inviting, they even made me a hot cappuccino-where the hell in the USA do you get a cup of fresh brewed coffee while waiting for your doctor appointment-so already they immediately were doing good. Dr. Alicia Kao was extremely helpful and answered any of my questions while I was waiting to see my specialist. I was scheduled to see Dr. Jeffery Hartzell for him to look at a possible torn pectoral muscle. And for those who don't know what this is, it’s your boob, and it is a rare injury to most but among athletes-weightlifters/bodybuilders it can be quite common. So due to the complexity of my alleged injury I needed to see an amazing surgeon, and sports ortho doctor. AMC provided me with Dr. Hartzell and he was great, he answered all my questions about my injury, spent time with me talking with me about my options and ultimately performed the surgery. I have been more than pleased with the expertise of Dr. Hartzell, he repaired my chest, and repaired my spirit! Being hurt sucks and for many people we might not be pro-athletes, but exercise can be everything to some people, BIG shout out to Dr. H! Thank You doc. Which brings me to the Physio department, I’m taking it really slow but my injury has been healing quite well and most of this is due to the fact that Roger Zhao and the AMC physio staff have been wonderful. Roger has made the necessary program that’s going to work for me, each session he has showed me what to work on, and how to do it, and also leaving me confident that I can accomplish my rehab at home during our off days. He always speaks with me during sessions and has even suggested some exercises that would help me on an old previous injury. Look these people are busy, but they will find time to help you, they are true professionals. It may seem expensive to you, but remember they are the best doctors in the world and they will provide you with what you need. All the staff at AMC is extremely helpful and will help you if you need it, from one stranger to another hopefully you are ok, health is everything and I wish you all the very best, people are happiest when healthy.-but if something is wrong I strongly without any doubts recommend American Medical Center in Shanghai!

The doctor appointment was fine, he did a comprehensive check. But, the physiotherapists are not good- they behave unprofessional(not caring about details) and is way too expensive. Not recommended.

Got some neck problems, and one day just went there for luck. It turned out truly helpful. Dr. Zhao taught me a lot exercise to main good posture, and it does really good relaxing to my muscles. I've taken physio there several times already, and it's quite fun after all. btw, the entire place is actually pretty nice and makes you feel peace.

Pretty professional outfit in my experience. The doctors are accommodating and did their best to help me when I went in with a chronic hip problem. It's a bit out of town but a good choice, especially for sports injuries and the like.

It's good to see to that so many are happy with the servive at AMC. Since others have offered quite details experiences I will do the same. ________ was very nice to begin with but as soon I started to complain that the PT I got gave me new injuries, she wasn't as kind anymore. Eventually she ordered all her staff members not to talk to me when I called (which I did in order to get my medical records which they never sent me). _______ was also very helpful to begin with, but when I asked him what responsibility AMC would take for having caused my new injuries he just invited me to Another (paid) visit at AMC. The Chinese PT suggested me to do exercises which caused a sincere strain/muscle break in my calf. I had told him that I previously had had problems with my calfsbut he assured me that the exercises he showed me would not at all be dangerous. When _______ replaced him I was given exercices for my foot (which Dr _________ had done surgery on) which caused a sincere pain and injury to the foot. When I consulted Dr ________ she said that I should not have been gven that exercise. The above are a few of the experiences I have had from this newly opened clinic. In sum, they were nice to begin with but in my opinion there are too many doctors who don't seem to correspond and therefore the doctors say different things to the patient. The fact that the doctors are not stationary at AMC gives that they don't communicate much with the PTs, which, obviously, is dangerous for the patient. Worst of all, though, is how I have been treaten after I complained and asked what they would do for me after they had caused me so much trouble. I have not even got an excuse. A professional clinic would, of course, have offered something in compensation to the patient that got hurt. The only reason I can think of that AMC didn't do so is that it is not a professional clinic and that they are here just to make as much profit as possible. They don't really care about me as a patient.

It seems that forgetfulness is a characteristic of AMC's patients... One wonders why? And also, why the "forgetting" was done before the review was posted...

After surgery in Australia to repair a severe injury to my rotator cuff and needing to find a suitable physical therapist in Shanghai, I was lucky enough to meet by chance one of the doctors from AMC. This lead to a series of therapy sessions with very successful outcome. The physical therapists at AMC have specialised knowledge and experience in sports-type injuries and speak excellent English - both essential points for me. They get my vote !

I moved to Shanghai last April and I didn't know how and where to treat my back problems. I finally found AMC and I have been treated with extreme professionalism, reliability and kindness, in every department. I really suggest eveyone who might need any medical help to refer to the Doctors of AMC, also to feel a little bit closer to home.

AMC was recommended to me by an American colleague after I pulled a muscle during a dance class. Since this was my first muscle injury I wasn't even sure how serious it was and was really grateful that the general practitioner and physio were happy to talk to me over the phone. They gave great advice on how to help me initially and when I still wasn't feeling 100% after 2 weeks I decided to go in for a visit. Everyone was very helpful, from the security guard who helped me to find (and get to) the door which was blocked off by construction at the time, the people at reception who were very professional and helped me to get a taxi after my appointment and of course the 2 doctors I saw. I ended up going back for 4 physio sessions over 4 weeks to help me recover. I appreciated that I wasn't just treated for pain but people took the time to explain how I'd pulled the muscle in the first place, how to stretch and exercise going forward to avoid similar issues and also to build support to avoid injuries in other areas and advice on how to treat myself outside of the physio room. Although the place is far from me, I would definitely go back for the same kind of advice and treatment should I need it again in the future.

littlexiaobai - it almost sounds as if you are sponsored by AMC... :) But anyway, I am happy for you that you have good experiences there. I think the main probem isn't the surgeries perse, rather it is that thedoctors visit very occasionally and do notseem to have much (or any) contact with each other or with the physiotherapeuts (who are really lousy, by the way). The lack of longterm responsibility for their patients has cost me a lot; I am very far from recovered after Three times of the normal recovery period. And the complaint letter I have sent to them has been met by - silence... To me AMC is like one of those louse travel agencys that appear to sell something good but in reality it is far from good, and when you complain they merely neglect you...

I visited AMC last year to get a diagnosis for elbow pain that troubled me for over 2 years - and at that time I had seen everyone that mattered in the medical profession in Shanghai (all major expat hospitals, osteopathy and physiotherapy clinics, acupuncture, TCM, etc). Through AMC I was first able to first get a correct diagnosis - a torn UCL ligament in the elbow that had been missed by every other specialist in town. The problem required a specialized surgical procedure called UCL reconstruction, AKA Tommy John, which as far as I know no one can do in China. The surgeon from AMC (Dr. Lyle Cain, from the famous Andrew's Clinic, and physician of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays ) who operated on me performed a flawless surgery. I was fully recovered after 8 months, 4 months less than the average recovery period. Though this is but one data point, I can't say enough about the quality of their services, staff, medical expertise, and post-op care. I'm not sure anything better is available within mainland China. Personally, if I'm going to get cut open, I'd rather not mess around and have someone world class do the job. There's a reason many pro athletes choose AMC as well.

aoshanghailaowai: it is good to hear that you are happy with AMC so far, but I must warn you (and all the people that may see your recommendation) that they were extremely nice to me too to begin with (especially when they got the opportunity to do some expensive surgery) but when I complained after some fatal mistakes from their side they weren't as nice or accessible anymore.

I did my MBA at CEIBS and have lived for 5 years in Shanghai. I have often used Parkway health throughout this time. HOWEVER, that is now at an end. I just found American Medical Center (AMC) and am in LOVE! This center has the TOP doctors from the U.S., the staff goes above and beyond, and they have provided everything I could wish for in my medical provider. I could not promote this new business enough and will certainly return. In addition, I will, without hesitation, refer all my friends. Amazing doctors, service, and free water / wine in the waiting room... SOLD!

I was fortunate enough to be able to undergo my surgery at this clinic....from the beginning to today, 5 months into my rehab post op, American Medical Clinic and their staff have been nothing but the kindest and helpful people concerned for my well being in general and not just my injury. With premiere class surgical staff support, and the most professional experience you can find in China for serious sports and sports related injuries, I cant understand why anyone would go anywhere else first. I feel more confident about my recovery because I know it was handled by the most capable experts in the world. Would reccomend it %100 to anyone in need of sports related medical help.
