Description

Shanghai's turbulent search for a new identity makes for great art at Canadian Director Martin Kemble's former French Concession gallery. An emphasis on free expression draws many artists trying to discard traditional notions of national and cultural identity. Submissions of artwork are accepted.

@artcollector, I have visited Art Labor a few times when in the area. It's basically Chinese art, similar to every other Chinese art gallery in Shanghai. The problem I have with the place is Martin Director Art Labor. Did you see his comments on City Weekend? He even insults people's views, calling reviews dumb and calling customers racist and candy ass. Martin Director Art Labor sounds like a complete waste of time. With so many Chinese art galleries to choose from, I suggest readers pick one with a Director that is more humble and decent.

Not impressed by this space. If they want to have proper exhibitions, they should have a better exhibition space.

@esther99 you are right that the gallery is not worth going out of your way for. I passed by Yongjia Road a few weeks ago and should not have wasted my time looking into the gallery. Ester99 you are also wrong (or things have changed).... Art Labor art ga

Well even though City Weekend "reserves the right to delete offensive comments", and despite my asking them to many times, Sunbear you get to stay, whoever you are. You are apparently allowed to tell outright lies about someone's business on City Weekend. Anyhow for what it's worth, even though you are making statements that are patently untrue: "They only have Chinese art" - did you really come in? Doubtful... Last show, Canadian artist, then Chinese guy, then a mixed show with more than half foreign artists, then a French guy, and then as for the year you commented about... but enough about it, who cares where the artists are from??? I personally think there are some great artists from everywhere, China included, (don't know why you are so anti-Chinese?! are you racist?? ) anyhow you are obviously just an internet troll, but City Weekend doesn't have the policy to get rid of idiots, just stuff the govt will give them a hard time about. Anyhow, art is a subjective thing, but hey, we just won "Reader's choice for best gallery in Shanghai" from TIME OUT magazine, so I guess somebody out there likes us. Most people do... Sunbear you should come into the gallery and have the balls (if you actually have any) to tell me you don't like the art, have a discussion, stop being a candy ass and wasting people's time... or acting like you are doing people a favour by telling them not to come in. I am guessing you are someone I already know, did I hurt your feelings? Aw shucks, sorry. If we were a restaurant and the service was bad then fair enough, but to have "reader reviews" of art galleries is really asking people to tell you what's the best colour or something. Dumb. All the best, Martin Director Art Labor

I went to have a look at the new Ying Yefu show on Saturday night and was very impressed! The new Art Labor space is wonderful. I can't wait to see what's on next.

Whoever, plat1num is, while we appreciate the comment, the owner is a sort of a balding middle age guy ha ha. but the art is, we do agree, quite special. Thanks for the up! And everyone, come by and see Ying yefu's big new show... great stuff.

Wow! Just down from Beijing a few weekends ago and caught Ren Zhitian's 'Everywhere is Here' opening - truly stellar! Excellent work and impressive space: will definitely try and make the next opening when I'm in the area! Formerly thought Shanghai's Art scene couldn't compare with Beijing's ... but believe I now stand corrected (and this is from a loyal Beijinger! haha)! Well done Art Labor - keep up the high quality work and excellent opening parties! : )

We might be only 165 m2, compared to so many really super awesome galleries around town who have like 500m2 and do nothing with it other than show the same old crap, but we try a lot harder than most galleries, and that is what is important to us and our artists. Esther has it right, we are something different ( though I would say Schlep alll the way here as we are located directly in the middle of the French Concession so unless you are ocming from outer Pudong it ain't much a of a schlep), and the Chinese artists we carry do not copy everyone else in the art scene, we are the next wave, not the same old blah blah. Thanks for the up Esther!

It's a small space. Don't schlep all the way there just for the gallery. But one good thing I saw during my 2 visits there: at least it did not have Chinese art, like all the other galleries in town. Something different.
