This place seems to have a split personality. If you go upstairs, it's over-crowded and there's a good chance your service will be bad. However, if you stay downstairs, it's much quieter and service is fine (and the food was pretty good too). So, take your pick.

The food is pretty good, great view and good environment. The bar on the second floor is usually pretty crowded and therefore the service can't keep up. However, the atmosphere is great!

Didn't eat food here, didn't go for dinner, and didn't go during the weekend so perhaps my experience was not representative. I received decent service, found a place with a nice table, wireless, and a plug, and enjoyed a nice tea. Quite pleasant. The location of the place is great and the view can be very nice on a nice day. I hope if I have food here it will not be the same experience that some have described.

Atmosphere and location are pretty good. The drinks, service and food are pretty poor. My friend's drink smelled disgusting, there was something wrong with the beer or the pipes / barrel it was stored in. When we complained, the waiter just laughed. He eventually did get given another drink which was mostly froth. Not worth going to until they start changing their attitudes!

I hate that place, their service was horrible, it is like they don't welcome you there at all. I asked for bill over 20mins but no any waiter come back. Besides the poor service, the food is good, the location is also good in the down town. Hope they can improve their service level soon.

The service in Barbarossa is the worst! Before we ordered, we told them we had 2 more people coming and the waiter didn't say we would have to share the space. He simply asked four of us to squeeze into one tiny table even we came way earlier than the waiting girls. After we refused, the waiter informed us that we need to pay minimum 1000RMB for keeping the table! We told him that he has no right to charge us like that, he said "Yes I can. We are running a business and I'm deciding this." Even worse, here are the conversation between us and the manager: "Sir, where are you from?" "England." "So this is how you treat customers in England?" "I haven't lived in England for 20 years." "So where have you been lived then?" "Hong Kong." "This is how you treat customers in HK?" "You just pay your bill and no more extra. Period." "You know what? This will be my last time here in Barbarossa." "OK." Yes I know this place is popular in Shanghai and I've been here for several times. But I just can't accept this kind of bully and disrespectful. That waiter showed us bill for several times in order to kick us out of "his business". I won't go Barbarossa again in my life and will definitely not recommend anyone to go.

Went there for dinner with my friends tonight, I regret to say that it was a rather forgettable experience. The service was nice, the waiters were very friendly, so props for that, but the food was not so good. We had a Barbarossa's Four Dips, which was probably the best part of the meal. The pumpkin puree was pretty tasty and the eggplant puree was also pretty good, but my friends didn't like the spinach. We had a Salad Nicoise, which was also mediocre at best. The dressing was too bland (couldn't taste it at all), and the seared tuna was slightly overcooked. I opted for a Chicken Tagin (which is supposedly a signature dish according to their menu), and I was pretty disappointed. The "seasonal vegetables" were nothing to write home about, and the chicken was definitely overcooked and a bit too dry (even with the sauce). However, I will say that my friends enjoyed the Mushroom Tanginelle, which looked nice (but I didn't try it). But given that it is supposedly a lounge, the drinks were pretty well done. I had a Lychee Sangria which was done pretty well, and my friend opted for a Peach Paradise, which was a nice drink (couldn't taste the alcohol). Overall, I wouldn't recommend people come here to dine, because at the given price range, there are just so many better alternatives in Shanghai, but their Happy Hour deal is pretty sweet and their drinks are nice so if anything just pop by for a drink with your friends (with a decent view). One last thing to the restaurant, please turn down the music! I had to find myself shouting across the table to my friends because the music was so loud.

I hope what jeff said about the food quality improving is true. However, I do like Barbarossa for a drink and met many good friends, including the love of my life, there, so I have many fond memories. Whenever I have out of town visitors, I always bring them by Barbarossa for a drink - the atmosphere really can't be beat. I also appreciate Barbarossa management's timely response to the complaint posted earlier: this is what is key to retaining customers.

Dear xaiotiqin, we are most disappointed that you had an unpleasant experience at our venue. We must declare that Barbarossa has never used inferior quality alcohol especially ‘fake alcohol’ as you have referred. We use Ypioca Cachaca Ouro ( a premium Brazilian rum) for our Caipirinha and Mojito and have done so since our opening in 2005. As for our service, may we apologize for keeping you and your friends waiting for your drinks, this is not acceptable to us, even when we experience busy periods in our operation. We are constantly evaluating our service and training procedures as we do strive to offer our customers a quality experience . We thank you for your comments and offer you our sincere and genuine apologies.

Sorry, But i disagree with Xiaotiqin. In a city like Shanghai where everyone is so fickle and not loyal. Where bars and clubs open and then close 3 months later its nice to have a "safe haven". Barbarossa after what ? 6 years now 7 years still has the BEST location in the City, The drinks have always been excellent, the food has improved 100% and believe you me if someone was going to "fake" an alcohol they wouldnt fake Caprihnia they would fake Jack Daniels or Absolut or another fast moving top level high selling brand. I drink Caprihina`s occasonally and have never had a bad one. For a bar as popular and iconic as Barbarossa they dont need to buy fake stuff as it would go round the city in 30 seconds flat. Leave that to the Judys and Manhattans and Scoreboards

I finally made it to have a drink in Barbarossa recently with a friend. BUHAO! I had one drink, a capirhaina (sp?) because I wanted to try one there. They must use fake or very bad quality alcohol because the next day I had a hangover! From one drink! Shocking for a place with a nice reputation and drinks for around RMB 68! The atmosphere was ok but it was also hard to get the attention of waitstaff when my friend wanted to order a second drink, a glass of wine, which after about 15 minutes was still not coming so we had to remind the staff about the order. Nothing special about this place other than it is convenient in location but thehangover from one drink with bad alcohol makes Barbarossa very unappealing.

As you walk into People`s Park and gently turn the corner you forget you are in Shanghai which all helps when you settle down to a table overlooking the park and lake and peruse the menu with a large glass of freshly muddled Mojito. Its a tough choice, it all sounds good.My selfish inner child makes me want to run into the kitchen and demand that they make me a sampler plate of all the appetizers and mains so i can decide properly. The wife eventually settled on breads with four dips (eggplant with garlic,a tomato with spring onion,a very flavorful curry-like hummus and another that slipped my mind as i had ordered the full Caesar Salad with grilled Chicken and was readily tucking into it like a man possessed. Crispy Romaine, large garlic croutons, Spanish ham, eggs, juicy grilled chicken breast and a fantastic Caesar dressing that wasn`t too over powering yet still had a subtle kick to remind you it was there. Main course. Half roasted Chicken with beautiful sauteed vegetables that still had a bite, tiny roasted potatoes and a tasty gravy that topped the delicious juicy bird. I opted for the sirloin steak sandwich that came with black pepper fries. The sandwich was stuffed with a large approx 160 gram Australian Sirloin topped with Swiss cheese, tangy orange chutney and fresh cut beef steak tomatoes in between two large slabs of freshly baked white bread. It was a two handed sandwich and was difficult to finish (especially as i have stolen some of the Wifes Chicken earlier). Cant remark on dessert as we couldn\'t move from the appi`s and mains but they looked just as delicious and vowed to come back again to try those bad boys out. Just a point, We went on Tuesday and there was a great deal on that night upstairs in the bar. a 1.6L jug of freshly shaken and muddled Mojito and a flavoured Shisha pipe for only Rmb299. FYI.

I had a very bad impression about this place. The hot waitress in a long skirt was very hospitable at first, but then she made a mistake with our order and brought my friend a Tequila sunrise instead of Corona, then when we were trying to explain her the situation, she hardly listened to us, bringing Corona but also charged us for the Tequila, when I was explaining her the situation, she was upset and took the tequila away, but never came back with the money (as certainly Tequila sunrise is more expensive than Corona). I wonder if she was a waitress or the owner... =S That'd not be a big deal if they didn't mistake with the hookah's flavour too (and didn't want to change it for us, again!), and we also had some Moroccan bread with sauces, but it was terrible for such price!!! The drinks were so-so, i felt weird that they put lemon into vodka redbull, barely felt any redbull in it :((((( So there was nothing nice about the place except the beautiful view and the waiter on the first floor ( i guess he was filipino) who was very nice to us, so at least we didn't have to go home in bad mood. =)

It's a great afternoon and early evening spot to relax and have a few drinks. The front room has the windows open, which is the perfect place to enjoy the lake and open atmosphere — one completely forgets they're in People's Square. I've stopped by a few times since the summer kicked in, and they've made on-point drinks every time.

Was a bit nervous visiting here on my wife's birthday due to so many negative comments but was pleasantley surprised. The staff actually made our night, we chatted with 2 Filipino bar men for most of our time there and they were great. Very nice atmosphere/decor and we will be back. We did just have drink so the real test will be to order some food.

Shame on your Barbarossa! You may think you’re the bomb but your attitude stinks and we’re not the only ones who think so. Sure you’ve got great digs and night-life ambience..the perfect combo for most Shanghai crowds..this is what has kept us coming back for years but ..the bulk of your staff’s attitude, if I may say so, sucks beyond belief and after a very nasty episode over Sunday brunch last weekend, we won’t be coming back! Case in point, it was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, we were starved, in the neighbourhood and looking forward to some good food. The set menu looked wonderful with lots of tasty choices but we settled on the French Toast …."stuffed with caramelized peaches and topped with maple syrup and whipped cream" – sounded awesome! The meal started out nicely with our delicious freshly-squeezed orange juices. Moments later, two steaming plates of French Toast arrived but something was not quite right - one key ingredient, the whipped cream - was missing. We immediately brought it to the server’s attention. It was clear she didn’t even know what whipped cream was because she pointed to what appeared to be butter smeared on top. We then requested to see the menu. It was brought out and we clearly pointed out where the French toast had been listed (in English and Chinese) with maple syrup and whipped cream, etc.... At that point, a seemingly more senior and very snotty waitress came over and proceeded to inform us that the whipped cream has been prepared ‘inside’ the French toast. Baked whipped cream? Gross. Obviously she had no idea exactly what she was talking about either or whipped cream’s general purpose in a dish. This was far from convincing so the dish was then taken to the kitchen and brought back minutes later where we were told that whipped ‘butter’ has been the actual correct topping and that the whipped cream listed was a printing error. Again, mistakes happen, but we wanted whipped cream and pointed out that their faulty menu was their problem and not ours. Unbelievable - they still wouldnt' bring it out! C'mon it's not like we were asking for a side of truffles! At one point, they did ask if we wanted another dish, but by then, the combination of the general attitude of the staff and the not knowing what other surprises the menu might contain has completely ruined our appetite. Ten minutes later, another waiter came out and informed us that as they had already cooked the dish, we would have to pay for it..to which I told him on no account would I pay! Was I intentionally being difficult? No! All I had wanted was some stupid whipped cream and they flat out refused to bring us any! And the actual dishes looked okay although the 'whipped butter' they'd been slathered in wasn't the good creamy NZ or French kind, mind you, but the cheap and greasy alternative easily found at the local supermarket. Of course, we did pay for our orange juices but not without saying shame on them for not dealing with this matter in a better way! And of course, to add even more insult to this obnoxious display, my friend's mocha arrived moments later – beautifully displayed in a clear glass – nicely layered coffee and milk finished off with…what else of course… but about 2 inches of lovely fluffy - whipped cream!!! WTF?

Been to Barbarosa twice so far. The first time was with a group of friends for some late night drinks. The cocktails were decent. However, the waiters weren't very friendly and felt a little overbearing. We were interrupted a couple of times in the middle of our conversation when the waiter would come over and ask us to pay, and while we fished around for money to pay he would stand there and watch instead of just coming back later. The second time I visited with two friends. It was Ladies' Night and complimentary Rosa Sangrias were offered to the ladies. Although complimentary, I was expecting the drink to be of good standard given all the hype about this place. The drinks taste like flavoured water with a hint of alcohol. The music was mediocre. What a shame, because it indeed would have been a great evening at its atmospheric rooftop terrace surrounded by the serenity that is atypical of central Shanghai.

Went there for the lunch set today in the sunshine, and was very pleased. For 72 rmb, I got a delicious soup and small salad, a nice pita sandwich with turkey, avocado and bacon with fries, and a tasty slice of blueberry cheese cake. Barbarossa har certainly stepped it up, and is taking the financial crisis into consideration. A tasty change for the better.

_Find of the Week_ | **Amazing Ahi**<br> When we go to this carnivalesque bar in People’s Park, it’s usually for the view and a hookah. And when we heard that Barbarossa had brought in a new chef, we frankly thought he was experimenting with new cocktail peanuts in the back. That is until he repaid our impertinence with two slabs of consistently grilled ahi tuna steak (and a killer lychee frappe), sending us into a state of disbelief. Here was rum and pepper painted tuna steak (¥140), a dish that went beyond “good bar food.” We fully believe this is an entrée that could do battle with fancy swordfish and tuna fillets from expense-account-only restaurants and win. Our generously portioned ahi tuna steaks were fresh and moist, with a translucent center the color of pink hibiscus. This silky fish, eaten with a compote of cinnamon-y, sweet figs and creamy couscous, is a dish we’ll be ordering the next time we’re looking for a fix of succulent fish. **Joanne Yao**

I think dinner options are overpriced there, but their ladies night (on wednesdays) is mythic. Good music, beautiful people... Nights are quieter the rest of the week, perfect for a date in the mediterranean loungy atmosphere or on the terrace (with view on People's park). I recommend the Very Berry cocktail.

We saw a mouse in Barbarossa! Last weekend, my husband and I went there to eat dinner. We were excited to finally try this restaurant out. But after we sat down and ordered our drinks, my husband saw a MOUSE crawling behind me! Totally gross! It was crawling along the ledge right behind me, then behind a pillow, and then it finally crawled into the wooden lattice panel. We immediately told the waiter we were leaving because we saw a mouse. He didn't even apologized. As we were walking out, he ran after us and said "But you already ordered your drinks." I said "There was a mouse in your restaurant! We are not eating there. Cancel our drink order." He responded with "How about eating outside instead?" Can you believe that! Here is an enlightment thought for that waiter ... It doesn't matter if we eat outside without the mouse, because they still make the food in the restaurant with the mouse! Finally, when we passed the lily pond infront of the restaurant, we saw about 10 Chinese people wearing Barbarossa t-shirts trying to catch something in the lily pond. Frogs? Why? Yuck! I'm totally grossed out by this restaurant.

Barbarosa is beautiful, set in the grounds of People's Park with a view onto the best that the middle of town has to offer. Drinks are good (i.e. strong), not cheap, but if you're tired of the Bund and want an equally impressive view this is the best alternative. Service can be a nightmare however, since the bar is spread over three crowded floors (plus the roof terrace) and if there was ever a fire, half of the French population of Shanghai would be wiped out.

**Issue 12, Where You Drink, Sheela Awe** "After living in Shanghai for five years, I've just adapted well to the people here and love the city's nightlife. Before going to New York in the summer to pursue a career in dance, I'll definitely be around chilling with my friends in some of my favorite Shanghai bars. **The manager there is a snobby dumb** The manager over there is unblievable snobby. I've called Barbaross to reserve a place for a big Brunch party but was pissed off. I was originally going to write a description in the invitation email for those who are not familiar with Brunch. The manager refused to fax me a menu for business confidential reason! How ridiculous! And his attitude is so snobby in the phone that make me annoyed. Great he lost revenue for over 20000rmb!
