Description

Set in a beautiful villa off a small, hardly-marked lane, this Shanghainese restaurant is one of the best in town. Few foreigners know it exists, and the food here is oily, sweet and as authentic as it gets. The menu doesn't have any pictures, but the Chef's Recommendations are always a good choice.

Be sure you call ahead for a reservation as this place is usually booked by those who are in-the-know! There's only a small handful of local Shanghainese restaurants that we go back to again and again. Even fewer places that we automatically turn to when taking out-of-town guests to sample the best of local cuisine. This is definitely one of our top three Shanghainese restaurants, maybe even top two. The sweet fish appetizer is the best in Shanghai. The shrimp is divine. Plenty of other famous local dishes are represented in the menu... and it's tastier here than at most of the other Shanghainese restaurants around town. Even if you're not particularly a fan of the typically sweet Shanghainese cuisine, this place will win you over for the best of this category.

Top notch restaurant. Can't go wrong with this one if you feel like trying something authentically local and classy at the same time. Whether you're a fan or not of Shanghainese food... this place is sure to impress.

Relaxed weekend lunch atmosphere in antique-furnished villa setting, pleasant service, very "Shanghai" food, artsy & hip table neighbors, and all for about RMB200/person. We quite liked the very sweet & tasty fried Shanghai fish appetizer that came in a generous portions. The plate of the excellent fresh water shrimp was way too big, but gone by the end of the meal (at RMB130 the "bill-buster). The scallion noodles ... well, O.K., but a little on the luke warm side and not quite the flavoring we are used to. But the chef's recommendation pork dish with the sweet & spicy sauce, spring onions and a couple of sauteed peppers had a very pleasant full bacon taste. The cod with the soy sauce was very tender, but too much in the same flavor direction as our other dishes - our fault, for choosing too many similar preparations. Just not much about the seasonal vegetables - spinach-like greens -probably the only dish we would not order again. The pu'er tea was generously refilled and the fruit plate (free of charge) was eye-pleasingly presented and just about all we could manage. Definitely will return and maybe try a table in the garden.
