Description

This sprawling eatery in the Reel mall comes courtesy of (Mr.) Craig Willis and is a popular lunchtime spot. The space is split into several parts, with a cafe on one side, a large, high ceiling main section and a patio that seats 60-80 when it's nice out. Expect to see modern, Australian-influenced Mediterranean fare similar to what's available at Mr Willis.

Went around 8:30pm on a weeknight. The place was more than half empty. They insisted we sit on a small and not comfortable looking table. We asked if we could sit at a more comfortable table and pointed to 3 or 4 empty tables. They said "no". So we left. It's not like anyone was going to come in and sit at those tables after 8:30pm. Didn't try the food.

Nice location, nice place, good service...but the food does not taste great, it's blend, chicken was on the dry side. No good value for the money you pay - starter + main + soda water=183rmb!!!

I feel like a wagas on steroids. The ingredients are better with the price to match. The double espresso was really good. Coconut cake which was on every table was very nice. Eclair was average. Decor is nice. Copper tables. Cliche cafe design. Nothing offensive. Has a pretty big outdoor patio. No complaints at all. The only cafe my friend will go to that's attached to a mall.

I like Mr Willis restaurant but not equally enjoy Henkes. The other reviewers could be right that it would be better for Mr Willis to focus on a couple of restaurants rather than branch out too much.

Henkes should be called Mr. Willis Jr.and that's not a bad thing since I really enjoy Mr. Willis food. But from the decor to the menu to the food to the presentation everything tasted like Mr. Willis. Came here for Sunday Brunch, lovely al fresco spot behind the Puli, great location but sufficiently quiet. Had the Eggs with the Lot, thanks to the bird flu the eggs were well done but pretty good. Antipasti, was good as well (but not much different from Mr. Willis) and the Berry Pancakes really hit home. Shirley Temple had orange juice in it? It wasn't traditional but still tasted very good. Really enjoyed myself the only thing that would be keeping me from coming back would be the value. Don't mind the prices but the service would be better.

I went to Henkes earlier in the week ( Monday night) for dinner with a friend and had an excellent time there. We had the pumpkin ravioli and the goat cheese/spinach pizza. Both are excellent, service was great. Both our food arrived on time, service was attentive. No complaint. Then I decided to come back today, Saturday, for lunch and to enjoy the nice weather. I have to say that my experience today was disappointing. Our table was dirty with trash on the floor. One would assume that when you clean up a table, you would check for falling trash on the floor around the area. We had the half roast chicken and the zucchini pizza. I took the pizza again because I knew it wouldn't disappointed and I was correct. However, my friend's roast chicken was disappointing. The chicken was dry and definitely not worth the price. Dare I say, Brasa Chicken is better! Also I learn the difference between "caramelized" and just burnt. The carrots that came with the chicken was burnt sadly. Also the service wasn't stellar and I had to remind the server to go check on my food as my friend was half way through eating his meal before mine came. And I also over heard 2 tables next to me complaint about the mix up of their food as well so I knew I wasn't the table with service issue. I really expected better since I had a good initial impression, however, hit or miss with the service makes me not want to come back because I'm going for a meal, not a lottery.

I don't know why everyone worships the ground Mr. Willis walks on. I went here and had the cooked seafood appetizer which was nice and lemony, fresh enough but not astounding. The zucchini gratin, overly creamy and bland, the pumpkin risotto too sweet and lacking in pizzazz. The bread, was bursting with fresh out of the oven freshness, and we were hoping that the rest of the meal would follow suit, but I really would not recommend anyone to visit, when there are so many better options in town . . .Maybe Mr. Willis needs to concentrate on doing one or two restaurants well, has he not seen the follies of the Eduardo Vargas, David Laris model of restauranteur?

Went to Henkes today for brunch and had the eggs benedict with the lot. Bacon, spinach and smoked salmon sounds like a strange combo, but's it's sensational. Very similar to Mr Willis, but more space and some nice new options on the menu. Really enjoyed it.

I love the Mr. Willis brunch, but I can never seem to get a table on Sunday mornings. So I was pretty excited when Henkes opened. Around half the menu items here are pulled from Mr. Willis and there are a bunch of new dishes designed by Craig. I love the breakfast pizza and the white bean dip. Also, the bloody mary is one of the best I've had in Shanghai. What's even better is that this place opens around 9.30am (compared to Mr. Willis which starts at midday), so you can get an early start to the day. This is definitely a new regular.

As Reel is not too far from my office I decided to have a quick business lunch with a friend over there to test what the buzz was about. Henkes is WAY bigger than i expected and has a great outdoor sitting area as well. The main dining area is decked in dark and earthy tones and makes you instantly feel at home. Service was prompt and fast. Lunchset is affordable and straightforward. I opted for the boiled cold seafood starter and the Minute sirloin as main. No complaints...the salad was marinated and showed mediterranean flavours and enough texture. Autumny in one word. The minute steak had the traditional fatty rim but the 2 large slices were sufficient to satisfy a grown carnivore like me. The meat was juicy and cooked a -point ! I liked the sauce and the wedges to round the picture up. I should have- in hindsight- not gone for the chocolate eclair which was not puffy enough for my taste. A double espresso concluded the lunch ! I'll be back Craig !

Been there twice since they opened two weeks ago. beautiful appetizers.. love the raw marinated seafood plate and the white bean & anchovies dip. Tip: Drop off at the curved driveway leading to the Puli Hotel and enter the new building next to the Puli via Henke's patio.
