Description

This German import is set in a mansion on the eastern banks of the Huangpu and serves up continental fare with an emphasis on dishes from its home country. It's got a garden patio, an underground wine cellar and, more impressively, an ice bar stocked with 150 vodkas.

Käfer is a great restaurant offering a great set dinner menu for various tastes. We went as a (4) couples a total of 8 people and had a memorable dining experience overlooking the beautiful city from its Pudong location. The restaurant serves some great German style breads to start your meal and the service was pretty good. We brought several bottles of wine and they did not charge us a cork fee which was a great bonus. Out of our tasting menu the only thing we didn't enjoy was the foie gras, served with some type of green gellatine on top, the taste was pretty bland. However the crab stuff pasta, roasted duck entree, Australian beef steak, and chocolate dessert cake rounded out the meal superbly and everything else tasted great. Overall I think it is one of the better Western restaurants in the city and not many people know about it, definitely worth a visit. Also after your meals hop down to the Ice Bar for a shot of Vodka, a fun way to finish a dining experience, will come again.

I recently visited Kafer by Binjiang One during Restaurant Week and was well rewarded in my attempt to try some place I've never eaten before, some place not overly publicized nor facetious with its food. The fact that this place is located in Pudong only adds to its winning appeal and praiseworthy merits... But even if it were located in Puxi, Kafer would hold up well even against the abundant competition. The food is simply delicious. The tuna tartar with avocado mousse melts in the mouth with just the right touch of herbs and seasoning. The veal backstrap was simple, and full of natural juices and flavors. The pistachio panna cotta with red berry jelly had just the right touch of decadence. Unlike some restaurants which put forth substandard menus for the discounted Restaurant Week fares, Kafer really impressed with its authenticity and true-to-self quality of food and service. Even for a discounted meal, it never appeared frugal in its offerings, nor did it overreach and put on airs. The staff was friendly and well-trained, even taking the initiative to offer me a tour of the ice bar on the first floor. (What a nice touch of genuine hospitality!) The decor was polished and inviting. The setting, nudged up along the waters of the Huangpu River, was idyllic. This is a place I'm looking forward to sharing with friends and out-of-town guests. Can't wait until my next visit.

Binjiang One with its great view from the other riverside on the Bund remains one of my favorites also after the recent renovation and changes in managment. The second floor is now much lighter, still keeping its fine elegance. In the first floor, the snow bar was reduced to about a third of the former; the gained space is now used for a Bavarian style restaurant. The food and its presentation were excellent. I loved in particular the foamy tomato soup and the beef at the bone as parts of a 4 set menu. The positive impression was supported by an always attentive (German) waitress. She did an excellent job in consulting the guests when they selected food, wine or cheese. Last and probably least: you can earn Lufthansa Miles&More miles.
