Description

This stylish eatery serves up a modern version of sultry, pre-revolutionary Shanghai, complete with an Art Deco-inspired ambiance. The clean flavors and light-handed preparation of contemporary Shanghainese fare provide a welcome contrast to the heavy decor. This eatery successfully combines competent cuisine, plush quarters, and efficient service at non-signature prices.

Go for the weekend dim sum! Fun to order all the dim sum you want for 88rmb. Nice venue too although weekend dim sum service is a bit hectic as expected. Good for big groups because they have big tables and private rooms.

I'm a regular at Lynn and usually enjoy a good meal. However, today (Sunday) when they have their "all you can eat" brunch menu, they were sold out of many of their brunch dishes. We were advised by their head waiter to order from their regular menu. Sadly, the dishes that we usually order were not freshly prepared, and didn't taste nearly as good as they usually do.

Last night I went to Lynn for the first time and it was all in all a good experience. What impressed me the most is the quality of the ingredients - greens actually taste like real veggies, fish and meat are very fresh and cooked with the right amount of oil (quite rare for a Chinese restaurant). Decor and ambiance are great though everything's a bit too dark especially if you're tired and you wear glasses :) Only weakness: I found that service is pretty inconsiderate and slow, which is surprising given the amount of people working at this venue. Besides this, I really enjoyed Lynn and I'm surely going to be back... It's not even expensive as some people had told me before.

Lynn is one of the best restaurants in Shanghai. I have not been during the all-you-can-eat Sundays, but I have been for lunch and dinner. The food is good and not too too expensive. The service is good. The atmosphere is clean and proper, with jazz music playing lightly in the background. I can't think of any problems with Lynn. The one "problem" is that it can get fully booked for lunch, so it's hard to get a table.

Nice place, but the foot is average and then quite overpriced... I went trice tried many different dishes and always left with the same feeling. As the overall ambiance, design and service is good, it remains a good place for business diner, or formal dates...when food isn't the top priority...

We went with 8 friends on Sunday lunch for the "Dim Sum buffet" at 88 RMB/person. Wide range of choice: maybe + 30 Dim Sum choices (including vegetarian option), soup, noodles, a few desserts, appetizers. Service (efficient, discreet and fast) and food quality are good. nothing was breathtaking and/or comparable with Dim Sum in Hong Kong but none of the dishes were below average neither. Overall good value, I think we can be back!

Definitely one of the better Chinese restaurants I've visited in Shanghai. They've got an excellent menu and some slam dunk dim sum. Get a booth, a bottle of wine and bring some friends.

I ate at Modern lynn about a month ago on the basis of a chefs recommendation. We found out later that he ordered form the a la carte menu while we opted for the all you can eat dim sum feast for 88yy. While my friend said he feasted on massive portions of tasty pork etc. We were i'm sure eating the offcuts and leftovers from the menu that has won the acclaim of recent times. As you walk through the doors just off the hustle and sweaty bustle of nanjing road you are instantly relaxed by the cool air and the charm of dark wood tables. If only the food had been as impressive. The service we recieved was borderline rude and we didn't get all of what we ordered but we did eat some things we didn't order. The cold chicken actually was swimming in vinegar and wine, the pork buns were more like candy they were so sweet. I did like the fried rice and the noodles but then again you don't need a restaurant chef or 88yy to whip that up. The egg tarts were the saving grace. Oh and I almost forgot the apple juice we ordered was foamy on top and then after a while split and turned a nasty brown colour. I mean how hard is apple juice? I may go back to try their proper menu but not quite yet.

Just a super solid restaurant. RMB60/85 lunch sets (minimum 2 people), had it yesterday. Everything solid. What really sets these guys apart though is service. Unobtrusive, always there. Interior of the resto is upscale without being snooty. The dining room off to one side though had a bunch of extra equipment half hidden behind a curtain. Why?

Haven't tried the dim sum yet, although I heard it is good. I've always ordered from the normal menu. Pretty much every dish I have tried has been good. Only once I had a problem - had a vegetarian friend who did not want meat with the beans dish. Asked for no meat and waitress said ok. Dish came with meat :-(. Also, twice service was a bit slow, especially when manager is not around. But overall, a very good dining experience!

Lynn Modern Shanghai Cuisine (whew, what a mouthful!) is a chic restaurant boasting a fabulous location in the middle of the ritzy part of Jingan. The Art Deco decor boasts a modern interior, dark wood tables, and charming private rooms for large groups. We were here specifically for the **all-you-can-eat yum cha lunch**, though were quite disappointed when we found out that it was now **88元** (up from 78元). Still, the clean and neat restaurant and delicious food made up for it. The dishes were all excellent. You'd expect sub-par quality for all-you-can-eat, but the quality was fantastic. Most of the dishes were delicious, with only a few 'misses'. In particular, I adored the ** smoked egg**, which sounded plain on the menu but we immediately fell in love upon first bite - it's basically a soft-boiled egg, the yolk all creamy and slightly runny. Another winner was the **dan dan noodles**, slippery smooth noodles resting in a delicious creamy spicy soup. The ** egg tarts, deep-fried red bean pancake** and **black sesame sticky rice balls** for dessert were also stunners. The only downside is that whilst the 1st round of dishes came out swiftly, they steadfastly dragged their feet with latter rounds - with some dishes just not appearing at all, or coming way way way later. This is the 'issue' many all-you-can-eat places fall into - they purposely don't rush on the food, in the hopes you fill up and order less. That behaviour drives me crazy! That said, my girl friend noted that when she came on a previous occasion, the food did come out swiftly. Still, a great place for yum cha, with top notch food. Just bring the price back down to 78元 please! PHOTOS HERE: http://beverly.livejournal.com/795329.html

I paid a visit to Lynn today with my mom and sister and it was a complete disappointment. Although their apple juice was an absolute crap, personal tastes differ, so I can't evaluate their food but it was mediocre for me (and my family). However, the service, was the poorest of which I have seen. We went for all-you-can-eat dim sum lunch around 1.30, not knowing that the lunch hour ends at 2.30. When we ordered our food, the waitresses came one after one, telling us that they have "run out of ingredients", and started serving dishes we didn't even order. When my mom complained about the kitchen not being ready to serve the guests right, one of the waitresses brought us a plate of egg tarts - one of the dishes that had "run out" - saying they'd found the last three tarts in the kitchen. Honestly, when I looked at them, they looked like left-over that just had been collected off some other people's plates. And when we finally got the check, they miscalculated the bill and added more drinks that we took. In fact, we didn't get more than half the food we ordered and more than half the food we got served we didn't order. I must say, today's lunch was a complete disaster. I mean - who leaves after just a couple of shrimp siu mai's at all-you-can-eat lunch! I hope they read my review and get more prepared to serve their guests. But well, I wouldn't know because I'm NEVER going back.

My meagre savings, in addition to my glutton, creates a predilection for buffets and such. Therefore, I can only comment on the weekend dim sum all-you-can-eat available at Lynn for 78rmb and not their regular lunch and dinner service. The food is of decent quality and interior is clean and civilized. What isn't civilized is the service during the supposed all-you-can-eat. It's so downright frustrating that I stopped going after being slighted by the waitstaff too many times to justify. If you have booked a table for 6 and start ordering when only 2 of you have arrived, expect them to bring two-piece portions despite protests that the complete table will be there shortly. They will never bring you everything you order and will not even provide an explanation until after 2:30 when the all-you-can-eat deal ends, and that explanation is usually a brusque "ran out." And why they couldn't offer you this information to you while you could still augment your food order is all too transparent. Not worth the fuss, so now I am often found at Tang Palace, enjoying their superior dim sum instead.

I like this place. Its certainly not the best, but neither is it expensive (nor cheap). For me, the ambience is great, as is the service, and the food always tastes fresh. It's a nice clean fresh place for Shanghainese food, and let's face it, not many of those around.

A five-star Chinese restaurant, décor and service (at least for dinner) are irreproachable. Candle-lit tables, dark wood, giant bouquets... Even before the 1st bite, you know you'll come back to impress your (foreign) friends and clients ! Food and wines met our expectations, with subtle flavors and not too much fat. I strongly recommend the Shanghainese Duck.

Went for dinner. Waitress spilled my drink while pouring, went and got some paper napkins and put them down under my glass without even an apology. The food was no better. Got the Shanghai duck. It was mediocre, meatballs with crab had no noticeable crab in them, and everything else was about the same. It's just a pretentious overpriced place with boring food. Maybe the dim sum is better, but I'll never know because I'm not going back.

The 78 rmb all-you-can-eat dim sum is a good deal, and I'll be going back in the future. Stay away from the beef in rice roll (cheng fen) -- it tasted as bad as it looked, sort of like dog food unfortunately. Aside from this unfortunate dish, the rest of the HK dim sum/Shanghai standards were done rather well. The shrimp dumplings (xiajiao) and egg custard buns were delicious. Another suggestion is to arrive there a bit earlier. We were seated at 1:30pm and a few dishes were already sold out during our brunch.

Am now a regular for their weekend dimsum all you can eat deal. Great value and the food is delicious. Service can be slow but when the price is reasonable and the restaurant packed.....expectations need to be pegged accordingly. I thought they did surprisingly well given the crowds and I think the comments above are a bit unfair. After all this is not fine dining (& you're definitely not paying fine dining or 5 star establishment prices).....so its great value for money and always satisfying.

Went to Lynn's for dinner one night for a birthday. Fantastic setting and great service. I however did not enjoy the food too much. It was some sort of modern chinese food? Don't get me wrong, it was good but not my style or taste. I thought it was priced a bit high for the food but again it was just my own preference.

Went to Lynn a few times now, but yet to try out the Dim Sum lunch. On the decor, well, as all the others said, pretty swank and contemporary, so it’s somewhere to impress clients and friends. Though they can turn the lights up a notch, so that people can see what they are eating, and not waste the presentation of the dishes. In terms of the food, the it's quite well prepared and presented, would seriously recommend the “Vegetarian Duck”, made of crispy thin bean curd sheets, also the “Drunken Chicken ”, marinated in yellow wine for starters. For the mains, you shouldn’t miss the Beef knuckles stew in red wine sauce, also sliced mutton/lamb wrapped in pancake rolls, garnished with shallots, which makes an interesting comparison to how we would normally eat Beijing ducks. Dessert menu is also extensive and portions are filling. Well recommended to others that want to try out some new style of Chinese cuisine, that’s not so greasy.

Should have read some of the reviews here first before heading out to this restaurant. Went for dim sum on Saturday - arriving early (before 12 o'clock). We were impressed with the decor until we had to wait for nearly 10 minutes before we finally got the waitress attention. Then we had to wait for another 45 minutes before our food finally started arriving - this is after asking about our order with the staff twice! The table next to us was having similar experience as well while other tables around us (even the one who arrived after us) had their order arriving continuously. Such a shame... beautiful restaurant, good food, horrible service. If Lynn is aiming to cater for mid to upmarket clientel they really need to do restaurant hospitality service 1.01 first

We went to this restaurant for the Sunday Dim Sum brunch. It was our first visit to the restaurant. Decor/atmosphere was nice. Dim Sum was good and price was great. Service was horrible. The wait between our each dim sum dish was extremely long (20-30 minutes) and many of the other tables were getting served much quicker. The staff were inattentive to us, not friendly or pleasant. Would not go back.

I've always been a big fan of Lynn since I first discovered it 6 months ago. The decor and the food have always been great. BUT that changed after my last visit when I ordered a 880 rmb steamed fish, only to find a 5cm long thick+curly hair in it. And the floor managers response being 'oh its JUST a small small (xiaoxiao) hair' and suggeting to give us 3% off of the dish price and a mango desert for each of us at the table! The service is what makes several of my friends and myself to think once again about going back. The service definately does not meet up to the standard of the food/decor of the restaurant and the type of guests who decides dine there. The attitude of the staff, especially of the senior ones, are equivalent to that of the floor staff in our ubiqituos cheap noodle shops around this city. Definately not suggested if you are looking for a comprehensive dining experience, since Lynn still has a long way to go to satisfy anyone in terms of their staff attitude and quality of service.

I felt like a billion bucks dining at this place. A swanky establishment with knock-your-socks-off Hong Kong and Shanghai dim sum - infinitely better than the greasy stuff I'm served off metal carts back home. The relatively unhealthy items are at worst shallow fried and not dripping with or swimming in oil. Dishes were sophisticatedly presented and exuded countless layers of flavors that a non-foodie like me can't even begin to describe. It was fantastic. But hey, I'm very easily pleased.

My wife and I have been to Lynn 4 times and each time we have gone it has been fantastic. Food is delicious, prices are reasonable, service is great, wine selection is decent, and the atmosphere is an added bonus. We even took the rents while they were visiting us a few weeks back and it was their favorite place during their 2 week stay.

ok, I have been to the resturant for a few month now, and each was a pleasant visit. But lately, the food kind of slide, and the service was less attentive. Today, I walked out of the place, after sitting in my place for 5-6 mins. I signaled for service, answered by 2 waiters, but non appeared. There were only 2 table during early lunch!!!
