Description

This Italian spot by Jean-Georges Vongerichten focuses on putting out coastal Italian cuisine including seafood, homemade pastas and wood-fired pizzas. It's homey, easy fare that's cheaper than most other Bund options.

Hip chic Italian with a modern, lively vibe, plenty of Bund view, good Italian wine list and creative-ish menu from seafood appetizers to homemade pastas to decent desserts. Staff is unusually friendly and helpful! I hate to say it but when most of the clientele consist of young nouveau riche Instagram-crazed locals and Western visitors; it just feels awkward. Highlights for us were; our cocktail cocktail (spicy Sicilian Margarita), warm seafood and avocado salad and the dark chocolate tart with passionfruit and the homemade gelato... It wasn't inexpensive but just about right for the chi chi location and the view and the atmosphere.

I hope Mercato will win best restaurant again. Even with a crop of new restaurants in Shanghai, Mercato remains outstanding. I won't rave about the food since everyone knows it's excellent with great pizzas and some innovative dishes. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, with several lesser quality copycats popping up around the city. Also, despite the previous reviewer's comment, the prices at Mercato are affordable. Yes, it's got a good view on the Bund, but also it's the same or lower priced as many non Bund Italian restaurants in Shanghai. Mercato is an outstanding restaurant in many ways, and the fact that it is fully packed every night without any special promotions shows the people realize how good it is.

Way too expensive. You really pay for the view, which is pretty cool I must say. Didn't want to go to a place like that to order pizza or pasta so went for a ceviche and eggplant dish, my friend had a pretty good burrata. It was good but despite that, not worth paying that price

Mercato doesn't have the most traditional pizzas around, but that does not mean that they are not delicious. I have been back several times just for their 4 cheese pizza. Plus, they have an innovative selection of high quality other Italian dishes on their menu.

I was there on my Bday night having dinner with a friend. The restaurant manager was sooo nice giving us one of the best tables in the venue. Wine was super and the food was amazing. We ordered the strawberry ricotta, the asparragus with Parmesan (simply crazy!), wild mushroom pizza and the pancetta pasta. Everything AWESOME! No place for dessert, so i guess i will be back to try it! Beautiful and elegant, perfect place for a date.

Did book a table for my bf birthday a week before, called to confirmed, aslked for a very nice table... arrived on time... and guess what? one of the worst table just in the middle! Asked to get a better table, only answer: "sorry, sorry", wait 20 minutes! Went to the bar to wait, full, had a small table in the smoking area, we don't smoke, nobody to gets us a drink, we have to ask for the drink list ourselves (I don't even dare nobody to offer us a drink as a compensation)... and... we finally just escaped!! So I cannot comment the food but only the service: worst than ever! Oh, and we asked for the Manager, he didn't care neither.

Best pizza I've had in my life! The other dishes aren't stand-out but for the price and the bund side location its actually a very good deal. I have a full review up on the blog! https://dreaminginfoisgras.wordpress.com/2015/03/23/mercato-shanghai/

The mushroom and cheese pizza at Mercato was really good, the base was crunchy and fresh, although I personally prefer a bit thinner crust. The homemade ricotta cheese and figs was excellent. The venue itself is excellent also. It was very crowded when I went, so the service suffered a bit.

Mercato is a great Italian restaurant. The decor is good, I love the minimalist style and the kitchen in the middle. The food is great, wonderful pizzas and other Italian dishes. And surprisingly the prices are not insane. No wonder it is busy every time I have been there!

SERVICE: Prompt and efficient seating on a Sunday night, with only 5 minutes' wait. Service was impaccable, everytime I got up (and I am a guy), a waitress came out of nowhere to pull back my chair and pushed it in when I sat, really impressive. But at other times, the staff were not intrusive nor hovering around. When they did come to interact, they were attentive, warm and friendly. This is in contrast to a fair share of impatient and/or snobbish wait staffs in many of the Bund area fine dining establishments that I have unfortunately encountered with. FOOD: Food ingredients were all excellent, from the main items down to side garnishes were all fresh and of high quality, and cooking was superb. Right combination of spices that brought out the right tastes. ATMOSPHERE: I didn't give it a full score as the decibal level was a bit to the high side, but still, but this was is very minor. At least, it all felt very festive. OVERALL: I would gladly come back here over and over again!

Mercato has gone down hill. Waitstaff was rough, inexperienced and chaotic today - valentines day. Not sure why - they only served a set menu. We received several blank stares when trying to get waitstaff attention despite there being 5 without anything to do. Hostess useless - made eye contact with her several times- never came over. Had to wait 15 min for a wine list. Dishes served brusquely, bumping into other dishes and water spilled. Felt like we were at TGI Fridays. Food was -eh. There was a hair on the oyster dish - yuck. Would have liked it more if they didn't try to shoved all of the set menu on our table at once. Horrible - sad cause it was our favorite.

Marcato is a fantastic space with great views of the Bund. It was good food. There was nothing disappointing or underwhelming. We were a large group, so there were many dishes being passed around the table. It comes off as a restaurant worth going to every once and awhile.

Pizza is really really good - like on par with best pizzas in NYC - nice perfect char on the crust, great toppings. Other food is pretty good but I go for the pizza! Venue is great - nice views and hip decor. Price is quite reasonable for a Bund resto too.

I have to say that this was a disapointment. I have eaten here before and liked it and it was for this reason that our group of 10 chose this venue for a group dinner. Unfortunately there was a glitch in the reservation process and our reservation was lost ( despite the that a call back was received and the reservation confirmed). I understand that mistakes occur. Afterall we are only human. However, how an organization handles a mistake is telling of the quality of the organization and how they perceive customers. After some discussion with hostess, we decided to wait at the bar for the balance of our party to arrive. We all ordered drinks. A manager came by to talk to us (and we presumed) to help. Details of the calls were provided to him. He left saying that reservations were done centrally and he would look into the situation. He never returned. We were at the bar for an hour and no -one came to discuss or try to solve the situation. We were ignored. So we left and went to another place to celebrate and spend our money. Had someone come and talked to us, apologized for inconvience or even treated us a a customer, my impression would have been very different. Overal, Mercato remains a good restaurant, however don't try to book more than 6 people to a table.

I haven't tried the other food at Mercato but the pizzas are worth it to go for again and again! I also love the decoration at Mercato. Service is good, too. At 88rmb for a margharita pizza it's cheaper than D.O.C. for a much better pizza in much better restaurant.

You have to be some sort of glutton for punishment to eat at Mercato. The attitude from the house from the moment my date and I walked in was so off putting that after being seated for less than 10 minutes we got up and walked out. Good manners required that I not leave without a word though, so at the desk-"We're leaving." Though I fully grasp that with their mindset, they are simply above caring.

Tried it twice. Look, the ambiance is fantastic, great location, but the food and service is a hit or miss - and I hate how they finagle bottled water onto - take it easy. Seafood and Stracciatella Pizza - bland as white paint - go with the Parmesan Risotto.

Mercato`s food, especially the pizza is deliciousIf. If you consider the food quality and the great service, the prizes are down to earth. We also liked the atmosphere, the modern furniture and the light in Mercato. Unfortunately the background noise was very loud.

each time I've come here, I've experienced nothing but great service. This is some of the best trained staff around.. which doesn't say much, I know, but I've never had problems here. I also absolutely love Mercato's food. Their ricotta and jam dish as well as their lobster ravioli are both amazing. I can't remember the names of all of the dishes we ordered last time, but of the 6-7 we all shared, not a single one was disappointing. I know its not the cheapest place around, but I've been several times and have yet to find a reason not to come back.

I would rate it five star solely by the food, the service is not bad but we had quite an unpleasant experience at Mercato last time. First of all, if you are charging RMB 98 a bottle of water, you should at least tell your customers that's NOT FREE instead of just asking "sparkly or still" right after we sat down. The RMB98 still water is not even on the menu while there're waiters carrying a jar filling up free water. Our pizza's only RMB88… Also we had to wait more than an hour for our lobster ravioli, the waiters and manager just kept telling us "it's coming", "five more minutes." They were nice and smily but it didn't make us feel like we were treated better than a neighborhood Dongbei restaurant.

dear Jean Georges, the staff service we received last night at mercato from the reception until maidan was absolutely outrageous. the staff was absolutely clueless, unhelpful, slow, uncommunicative, fake. - no one was at the reception desk for about 3 minutes wen we first arrived. - we had a reservation at 9.30 and didnt get to seat until 10.20. the staff kept telling us the table is being prepared for about 35mns, but yet they couldn't tell us which table we'd be seating at, which is unacceptable given we were on a business diner. - arriving at our table, we saw a party of 3 people next to us who looked so angry with the service as well, who told us they'd been waiting for their dessert for 40mns and that actually killed the diner. when the dessert arrived, they refused to have it, paid and left. that proved that we weren't an isolated case. actually quite the opposite. - the main course arrived at different times, which is fine for small chinese dining, but for a JG standard, it is well below par. it's not very nice to have your client ask you to eat first because the pasta is going to get cold. - given what had happened earlier with our sweet neighbors, we decided not to even try and have dessert. Dear Jean Georges, it is a fat shame as the food and what happens in the kitchen is pretty special in a good way whereas what happens in the front of house is pretty special but in a shameful way. only the interiors are amazing. but that didn't suffice to digest the bill which would have ben acceptable if the service followed the same quality. your staff should better get better. soon. until then, i do not think you'll see much of us again.

Came here last night with some friends who were visiting from out of town, we had a lovely evening. The ambience was lovely, the staff friendly and helpful and very efficient. The tuna carpaccio was delicious and the grilled salmon Porcini was excellent. Stunning view of the Bund from any table you choose. A lovely place to relax after dinner for a few drinks also on their comfy sofa chairs. Definitely worth checking out.

Lots of wood decoration. Mercato is definitely better than Laris Restaurant, which was in the same location. I actually prefer Mercato over Jean George's main restaurant. It seems simpler and the prices are better! For the consumer, that is. I recommend the cheese polenta and the mushroom and 3 cheese pizza, fresh from the pizza oven which you can't miss! absolutezero, you said you would be back in 2 weeks... 2 weeks later dancebear goes and makes a similar review (having eaten the same dishes, the ricotta and spicy sausage pizza). Both of these 2 "reviewers" also have similar reviews for other restaurants.

I have high hopes for this place. It's designed well and it's got the backing of JG. When I tried it was a few days after opening so I expected a few speed bumps. I had kingfish to start, presentation nice, but the citrus made it so acidic I couldn't taste the fish! This was the the only really big speedbump. Next I had the spicy sausage pizza, before i get to the taste, i was disappointed that the ricotta didn't come up first as I wanted the pizza to be my entree. That aside, it was really good, just the right amount of heat in the spiciness, but i still had a strong lemon zest stuck on my tongue from the first dish. Finally the ricotta, that was delicious. It made me want to lick up the final bits of it. They definitely need to work out a few things, but I'm going to check it out. Pretty good value for the money as our bill came out to about 400 a head including wine.

Ok I did go back for more artichoke risotto last Saturday and it was still delicious, as was the grilled fish, and the salmon. Restaurant was pretty full at 8pm - filled with the buzz of a new venue. I think it might be worthwhile to mention that the menu is designed for groups to share, family-style.. in my opinion, a group of four (or its multiples) is perfect, considering the portions. Our party of three was also pleased with the bottle of Lugana, a lovely Italian white wine which was recommended pre-arrival (also one of two whites available by the glass). Look forward to my next visit - hopefully by then, the staff will be more relaxed..

I was really happy to see an affordable mid-entry restaurant open on the Bund. I enjoyed the meal overall, though I'm more excited to come back again in two weeks after they get a bit more practice. The service and decor is impeccable as to be expected from a Jean George restaurant. The ricotta cheese app was simply amazing as was the spicy sausage pizza. Tried almost a third of the menu my first night can't wait to go back and try the rest.

Had my first fine dining dinner experience in shanghai at Jean Georges 2 weeks ago. It wasn't what I would expect from the JG franchise. I was guessing that’s just china. But last Friday at Mervcato, it proof me wrong. The food was delicious! One of the best Italian I had in a long time . loved the view and the atmosphere was great. It’s fun and relaxing.. highly recommended.
