I cannot say enough about the quality of the staff, the efforts of the management and the stunning views available from the building itself. Mrs Narsfs and I just got back from a wonderful weekend stay here as a celebration for our one year-wedding anniversary. At every stage the management were informative, helpful and patient in accommodating all requests. The room they booked far exceeded my expectations and Mrs Narsfs (for probably the first time in her life) was speechless at the breathtaking view from the suite. The decor is not to everyone's taste, and certainly it's a little unfashionable, but the style of furniture and decoration is upmarket without being pretentious - the bed is enormous and at the perfect level of firmness to offer great support. Many thanks to Mr Darisse and the Horizon Club staff who were all incredibly welcoming at all times.

I was at the Shangri-La recently for the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) Global Series Conference in March 2008, so I didn't actually stay here. However, from what I saw, I was impressed enough to write a review of it. Let's start with the interior design. It's a pity that these reviews don't allow pictures, because the interior itself is quite worth seeing. The Shangri-La is opulent, fashionable while not being fulsome. The warm interior color tones provide a welcoming yet professional environment; every detail down to the little sprig of (real) leaves with a (real) rose in the candle vase is carefully done. Even the Oriental-Western fusion rugs in the China Conference Halls were of high quality in both design and comfort (puppy-rolling heaven). Next is the quality of the staff. All the hotel staff were extremely courteous and most of their English was equally as good. I have to admit to being surprised to being greeted by the bathroom staff, but such level of service is exceptional. As a side note, most of the hotel staff physical appearances were above that of the standard. I am not sure if this is a result of certain hiring practices or if well-groomed people just look better. I'd recommend taking friends here just as a tourist stop (if they cannot afford to stay here) to see how nice the best hotels in Shanghai can be (I'm kidding). After all, the Shangri-La Hotel is conveniently located by all the other tourist attractions including the Pearl Tower and Shanghai Aquarium.
