Description

Head to this authentic spot for dishes like ox tongue, plenty of kimchi and a wide variety of seafood. The staff are direct from Pyongyang and speak English, Chinese and Korean. The extensive menu is also in English. They've got a stage where dancing, singing and live Korean music are performed as videos of North Korean mountains play in the background. Kim Il-sung might be rolling in his grave, but you'll be licking your lips.

This Pyongyang-backed restaurant offers North Korean fare while the waitresses takes turns to warble karaoke or perform various dance routines. The food is at best average. The sashimi was frozen solid and the beef in the pumpkin casserole was on the chewy side. I didn't eat dog, but it is available, along with a load of other classics you'd expect to see on any Korean menu, North or South. The performances were three-star hotel quality, with mic feedback to match. They weren't bad enough to belly laugh at, which was a shame, as they certainly weren't good enough to enjoy. Being a dictatorship-backed venture, you might expect the atmosphere to be a bit tense. But the mostly Korean and Chinese diners seemed relaxed enough and the waitresses' plastic smiles matched their Barbie outfits. I did raise a few nervous eyebrows when I asked our waitress a few questions, but she answered them ok, albeit with party-line answers: “I love my job, particularly singing every night... I like Shanghai but I miss North Korea... all us girls are great friends”. The trouble with this place is that even a voyeuristic visit just leaves you feeling a bit depressed. This place is so far from life in North Korea and it's impossible to get a true understanding of these people or their lives. So all that's left is mediocre food and mediocre performances.
