Good tailor made suites, the price is 5 times less than Europe for a qualified one, very nice.

You get what you pay for... Maybe not the best quality in Shanghai but: I had a jacket made there a while ago and it's still in good shape and fine It's fun to select my own fabric, buttons, etc. Overall, I definitely recommend it

Star ratings really don't apply here, since each individual shop deserves its own set of ratings. On all three counts (quality, value, service), I'm sure the full range gets covered. It's mostly up to you and your bargaining skills to make sure you're getting a good price. As for quality and service, start with a single, not-too-expensive item (say a dress shirt or modifying a piece of clothing you already own) to get a taste of what the quality and service are like. If you have a bit more time, hang around on a busier day to see how they handle other regular customers. And if you have a bit less time, start with a referral from someone else. I hear that the markets aren't as cheap as they used to be, but I think there are still some decent deals out there.

I had to go and have some tailor made suit. Overwhelming is definitely an understatement, it took me 40 minutes to find the shop I found the first time. I've heard many things about the "fabric" market, more commonly called the fake market. Seems like going there is a good place to try your luck. If I could have I would have put variable in Quality and Service. I'll stick with the 5 star value though, because you can find great bargains if you insists for a bit. After all, with all those shops competition must be harsh, no?

I went to the market to have a suit made as I planned to go to a friend's wedding in the States. The market can be quite overwhelming and I wasn't really sure which stall to go to. In the end I just picked one at random. The one I picked turned out to be a good one. While it might not look the fanciest, what matters is the service you are going to get. From what I understand, the stores do not actually tailor the clothes themselves, they just contract it out to tailors who are shared among the market stalls. So really all that matters is if the store has friendly staff who can understand your needs and explain them to their tailor. I can recommend booth 146 on the first floor. Lin Fen and her husband are very friendly, speak good enough English and are very accommodating. I went for a measurement and picked out my fabric and explained my desired style using photos. This was followed by two fittings where I asked for numerous modifications to the original design. Despite my complicated requests and my changes of mind, Lin Fen was always friendly and happy to accommodate me. The end result was great and always garners positive remarks when I wear it. I'd recommend.

Second what was written below - do not buy anything made out of "leather" at the "leather" shop on the second floor. Do not buy anything made out of leather at these fabric markets. The guy who runs it is a barefaced scammer. Certain it is the same place mentioned below because I had a good look around the whole premises and there is only one leather jacket place there. Has nice jackets on display, that are actually made out of leather. I ordered a leather overcoat, black 3/4 length about $350. Went to pick it up, the guy wasn't around just the lackey. Noticed immediately that the leather (epaulettes ?/cuffs) at the end of the sleeves were about half the width of the display model. Told the lackey about this, but the display model had been removed. Typical Shanghai scammer - just think they are so much smarter than everyone else. Got back to Australia & GF pointed out my jacket was actually plastic - such a clever little chap from Shanghai. I live in Melbourne, my name is Jonathan email is jlryan50@yahoo.com. To the clever chap at this market, I will more than happily repeat this post on this forum and others, unless of course you choose to contact me and work through this little issue. Also the review will be put up on Mandarin & other foreign language bulletin boards. Repeat again "Do not by anything made of leather from Shanghai fabric markets" ; "Do not by anything made of leather from Shanghai fabric markets" ; "Do not by anything made of leather from Shanghai fabric markets" Enjoy Shanghai great town and great people (with one or two exceptions)

Avoid the shop "pretty woman" in the Shanghai south bund material market. We had the worst expérience ever in this leather shop. We ordered two leather jackets and when we pick up them, they were not well done, not in the good size, really ugly and absolutely not what we ordered. Unfortunately for us we gavé to the shop saler (called hannah) a deposit of 1200 rmb and she didn ´t want to give us our money back, even though she promised us two days before that if we were not satisfied we coule have our deposit back. We didńt want to let our money, we wanted to call the police but any chinese of the market wanted to help us. We went out of the market, called the police and spend almost 2 hours in the police station. Finally she had to give us the jackets but we never receive or money back. After that we discovered that the jackets were not in leather but in plastic... We got scamed. So avoid this shop on the second floor: 2F 248. The girl hannah with squared hair cut seems really Nice in the beginning but she is evil and absolutely not honest.

If u r looking for leather garments, try to avoid booth 319. The choice of skins, textures and colors is tempting, and they promise to copy any style. But the result is more than disappointing. The examples they have over there is definitely purchased from factory stores, and thus of good quality. We have ordered leather jacket there, and got a disaster for over thousand yuan. They promised to make it in 7 days, finally we got it after 15 days, with coming there every day for changes. Leather is scratched all over, button eyes are just cut in the leather like holes. It seems that they ignored the information on the receipt about the plastic buckle. Two layers of skin on the belt are glued to each other instead of being properly stitched. The owner is persuading, that "this is the new technology, and the examples r made under the old one". While waiting for our buttons, we witnessed bad luck of two guys in the same booth: one had to leave the day after and his jacket was not ready, other got the wrong style and got a promise to have it changed and delivered later ( only point, is that, when he asked the owner to show him his address, it turned out she didn't have any idea about it...and the address was overseas;). After that we needed few minutes to decide to take our invalid jacket and leave, in case she offers us to send it later as well... :))))

My friends, family and I have had many really good quality things made. Make sure you speak to some one who knows what they are talking about and shop around for a good price. Just this week we had our first really bad experience and that was at stall 216, on Floor 2F, called Shirley. Just do not go there! They we supposed to make 2 dresses and later denied this and only had 1. They just lied to us. The 1 dress that was made was very badly made. It was unwearable and could not be changed. We just left it there They would not give our money back. We will go back to the market but will never go back to Shirley!

I have been living in Shanghai for about 3 years and finally went down to the fabric market. I took the advice of one reviewer and went to booth number 338. They were awfully nice and offered suggestions. I had one simple jacket made, a copy of one I purchased from J. Crew. I also asked her to fix a seam on the collar of a cashmere sweater I had bought from Banana Republic. There was about a 2 inch section of the seam that had come loose. She agreed and told me to come back in 6 days. I came back in about 13. She told me the jacket wasn't ready. I asked her if it wasn't there or it wasn't finished. It wasn't finished. She asked if I could come back the next day, I couldn't. She told me she would deliver it later in a couple of days to my apartment. It never came. More than three weeks after the original date it showed up to my apartment, by Kuaidi, after much discussion and many phone calls and excuses, too big to wear. But the best part is that the simple seam I had asked her to sew up for me looked as if a child had done it, left handed with his eyes closed. Absolutely terrible. I can't speak for the fabric market in general. People have gone and given good reviews. My friends have gone and loved it. Me, I don't think I'll be rushing back too soon. Maybe I am just used to a higher standard of quality. I vacationed in Vietnam some time ago and spent several days meandering through the tailor shops of Hoi'an. In three days Yali made me an incredible suit and two shirts completely from scratch and they even had me come in to try them all on and make adjustments. Booth 338 and Ms. Qiao couldn't get a seam and a corduroy jacket right in 3 plus weeks. Good luck.

Go to Mrs. Qiao at booth 338. I've been using her for over 3 years for suits, tuxedos and overcoats. I send all my friends to her. Nicest lady. As long as you dont rush the delivery date, she makes it perfect.

Thanks MiamiGirl! Any suggestions for booths to go to? Booths to avoid (besides the expat story that appears on this site re: a dispute over a retained receipt, which I still remain suspicious of in terms of how that transaction was navigated by the expat)?

Mens' suits typically range from 450-650 RMB, depending on fabric type and the size of the suit. My husband regularly gets shirts for about 100. We've paid a bit less, or a bit more, again depending on fabric or number of shirts ordered.
