Description

This Canadian deli is just about the only place in town where you can get Montreal smoked meat. Indulge in regular or "monster"-sized sandwiches with your choice of lean, medium or fatty meat. All their meat is imported and everything is smoked or otherwise made from scratch in the kitchen. They even have poutine with cheese curds. What more could you want, eh?

I love this place. I could eat at Tocks every day of the week. I have been many times and enjoyed it every time. I plan to go back again on Monday. No better smoked meat in Shanghai than at Tocks.

Perhaps the head chef is not in the kitchen, we've been recommended to have a quick lunch here but full of disappointment with this place, yes the price was great but I would rather have valued food in this area

Love this place. That said, it's not as good as the smoked meat you can get in Montreal. And the poutine... needs some work. (But really, the best poutine should cause cardiac arrest in 1/4 of the population and comes from a greasy shack in rural Quebec, cooked by someone who's chain-smoking in the kitchen.) So, while I'm in Shanghai, this is the place to go. Eat smoked meat. It's good.

Usually I don't do double reviews but this place deserves credit for some really good food. It's definitely worth the price they charge. My favorite would be the Reuben with fatty meat and an upgrade to poutine. Decadent I know but no sense trying to be healthy with food like this this. The foreign manager there is a pro as one order had a mixup. Definitely recommend this place.

I don't live in the Bund area, but I make special trips to that part of Shanghai just to go to Tock's for the Montreal smoked meat. It is excellent! The venue itself is small and nothing exciting. Last time I went, it was crowded and the service suffered quite a lot. But I still like Tock's. Personally, I think Tock's is worth the trip all the way to the Bund area.

We revisited Brian's place, and good news! nothing has changed, same quality, good service, quality/price is the best in Shanghai. Tock's is the best place in Shanghai to enjoy a lunch or dinner, close to The Bund, close to Nanjing East Rd. We will continue coming here to enjoy the real Canadian smoked meat and Poutine. Thank you Brian. My Spanish friends who visited us this week really enjoyed the dinner.

The sandwiches are pretty good, although a bit on the salty side. I will have to try the bagel sandwiches. Although a City Weekend writer dreaming of a bagel sandwich raises some sanity concerns in my mind. I didn't have anything close to 5 star service, though.

Finally pulled myself together and went for lunch.. Had the Reuben - uhm, uhm, uhhhmmmm! Excellent, if I may say so.. The meat is sooo good. My only concern is the bread - I am not from Montreal, neither a big expert on Reuben's but in my opinion, it was a little dry. Maybe toasting it would help.. I don't know, and hey.. I am not there for the bread but the meat! Go try it out..

Triple Awesome !! Please keep up the Great smoked meat - fresh, juicy and importantly authentic, the Great portion - that's true Montreal, and Great service especially constantly remembering to close the main door to prevent strong wind from blowing in. Only one small request.. please clean the oil-stained long table well, it's my favorite. Many thanks for great meal !

We enjoyed our meal here - food was great and it certainly is unique in Shanghai. I personally didn't like the fact that the tables are so close together, as we had a really annoying young couple next to us! But I appreciate that it's a small place so they need to have them close really! Service is great - a couple of things were forgotten and the manager/owner? was really nice about it and really apologised but it was no big problem at all, but still, it's rare to find a good level of service like that in Shanghai and was definitely appreciated!

I did the fault to take a date to Tocks for dinner. It is definitely not for a date. The open kitchen is attractive but it is so noisy! The plates are crashing after every minute. I could not enjoy the ambiance. Even if not for a date that loud noise is not interesting.

Just visited Tock's for the first time today and was really impressed! The whole family loved it. A bit surprised to read the bad comments, I guess no restaurant is 100% perfect but I will say cleanliness and tastiness were definitely not a concern for us. (although, totally agree the bread could be better :) btw! to the previous comment about pink salt? my brother has been smoking and curing meets for years... from my experience, pink salt is a normal ingredient that protects against bacteria in the meats. its not harmful... just google it.

After being recommended by a few friends and seeing revviews I decided to take try Tocks. Not quite sure what the few negative reviews are about here. The food is good. The meat was tasty and fresh. The bread although not the best Rye bread I have ever had was fresh and certainly did not distract from the flavor of the meat. The fires on the side are of a thin home cut variet. Again they were fresh, hot and tasty. I also enjoyed the coleslaw on the side. The one item that I was not impressed with was the pickle. It was tremendously salty and just did not tast good. Service was adequate. No complaints. I was seated quickly, able to order food when I was ready and get another drink when I wanted one. My order arrived promtly and accurately. Cannot ask for much more than that. I see some comments about price. It seems those who find this expen sive have not eaten at other deli style restaurants in Shanghai. Pricing is the same as other restaurants with similar offereings. I will return when in the area again!!!

@ben, a rat trap on the oven is scary! I have also found the quality of Tock's to have gone a bit downhill lately. Not a lot, but not quite as good as it was before. I hope that they will raise the standard again. It was really good before. And hopeful

I went before to Tock's and liked it. Went again on Wednesday and was less impressed. The smoked meats quality has gone down, the bread in the sandwich is poor and the fries of the poutine were cold. Over 100rmb for a sandwich and average poutine is not inexpensive in such an environment. The most negative thing for me was, as I was leaving... I saw clearly a rat trap over the oven in the kitchen. They didn't even attempt to hide it. It's a bit scary. I hope no rats' meat or even worse rats' droppings in the food.

Brian, owner of Tock’s here. Thanks for trying out Tock’s and for being a returning customer! Even though you have some very serious concerns now, I do appreciate your business and I understand 100RMB is a lot to pay for an underwhelming meal. The quality of our meats has remained exactly the same since the first time you tried it. Since we hand-season, cure and hot slice the beef, there is always the potential for slight changes. When this happens, just let us know. About the rat trap- I can assure you we do not keep rat traps on top of the stove (even if we wanted to, there’s no room!) But I am very cautious about cleanliness and I have recently implemented preventative measures for potential nuisances such as mosquitos, cockroaches, rats, ants, etc. Its standard procedure for us to do whatever we can to prevent problems like these. So yes, we do have all kinds of traps hidden strategically in and around the restaurant, and I’m sure this is why we have not had a pest problem yet. About the trap you saw on or near the stove, I’m sorry for the “shock effect” of it but it’s not supposed to be there, and it may’ve been one of my new preventative measures that someone was too lazy to install. I did ask my staff to install one UNDER the stove, again as a preventative protocol. Better safe than sorry, in my opinion. Tock’s carries my family name and is thus not just my business, it’s a family business. I can’t guarantee that every meal will be perfect, but I can guarantee I will resolve any complaints you may have. I can also tell you we don’t have rats (knock on wood) nor do we use rat meat in our products. I hope you can give us another try and please contact me personally when you do as I tend to often be around the restaurant.

I'm not going to say this place is overhyped and overrated but if somebody did claim it to be, I wouldn't disagree. A lot of meat in-between some pretty average bread. Also, i've come to learn that the pink colored meat isn't natural. They use some crazy "pink salt" that is not good for you. This led me to drinking a 2 bottles of water at the family mart after my meal. Service was underwhelming at best. Not sure what all the crazy hype is about. I would not go out of my way to visit again.

Brian here, owner of Tock's Montreal Deli. Just spotted your recent post and wanted to follow up with you directly- I hope you don't mind. About the bread- what can I say? It's not like my mom's homemade bread; but it is homemade from a Shanghai-based bakery using a special recipe from Montreal. I agree it could improve, and we're always interested in customer feedback or even referrals to other bakeries. I'd be open to any suggestions you may have, but I'll just add that I've already tested the best bakeries in town. What I really need is a bigger kitchen and more staff so we could bake our own bread… but this is a far-off dream for now. Just a heads up, we will be introducing bagels soon, which add a totally different experience to our sandwiches. Come in and try it sometime, or feel free to email me directly. I’ll let you know when we have a fresh batch coming in. About the meat- we do use a pink curing salt (sodium nitrite) and I can assure you, (or if you’re really interested, provide you with some credible sources) to better explain the absolute necessity of such an ingredient. I’ll do my best to explain now (and I hope this won’t be too boring for you). Our pink salt is about 94% sodium and 6% nitrite. The primary reason it’s a critical ingredient in smoked meats (even more so in ground meats and sausages) is because its an anti-microbial agent; it kills bad bacteria, one of which causes a fatal illness called botulism. It is true that pink salt, if ingested directly, could be toxic. But when used properly, and cooked, its actually beneficial as it kills harmful bacteria. It’s standard procedure when curing or smoking meats. The reason the salt is pink is to prevent any mix-ups between curing salts and regular salts. Per the color of the meat, smoked meats (similar to sous-vide meats) do often retain a pinkish/raw looking color even though they are fully cooked. It is true that using pink salt also [indirectly] affects the color. But this is not the reason we use it (per my abovementioned note). Feel free to google “pink curing salts” or even “carcinogenic foods” for more info. Sorry for the overkill message, but just wanted to clarify that not liking our food is one thing, and you’re entitled to your opinion of course. But I do have to clarify that we definitely don’t provide dangerous food nor do we use ingredients that are otherwise dangerous for consumption. Let me know if you have any further questions and hopefully you’ll give us another shot. I’d also like to add that next time you receive under-whelming service or products in my restaurant, feel free to talk to a manager or the owner directly. Its impossible to be perfect at every step, but we certainly appreciate this kind of feedback so we can work to be better. With this said, at Tock’s we’d be happy to have you as a returning customer. I hope this message helps a bit and I look forward to hearing from you.

The sandwich was pretty good. My interaction with staff was limited: I ordered pick up over the phone, and they took my order accurately. Then I picked up the food, paid, and biked about twenty minutes before eating. Not a meal I recommend self-transporting, but the food was still good. Next time I go, I'll just eat there!

Went to Tock after reading and heard nice things about it to be direct me and my gf feel a little bit disappointed we order the poutine, one reuben and a smoke turkey sandwich First it took us a while to get the waiter to come and the one we had barely speak 2 words of english , luckily my gf speak chinese , so she order the food and request her smoke turkey sdw to be without any sauce The food came quickly ( too fast ) which is maybe not a good things unless you are fast food style restaurant my reuben was hit or miss, the meat was delicious ( lean ) , but everything around was disappointing, the bread is so so not even toasted ... the presentation is nice on these basket, but the way how they assembled the sdw is very bad and definitly not very attractive I also have to say that they got it wrong as they also didn t putt any dressing on my reuben when it was only requested for the turkey sdw we left the place with mixed feeling , and don t know yet if will give another try or not

To respond to Brian(owner of Tock) I was very fair in my review and even asked my friends of their opinions so concur my feelings. My review accurately reflect my views and feelings of that particular experience. I use "IMO" throughout. I wouldn't call it a poor experience. Because of the service? This is china, I don't expect much. I just shared my experience. If this service is below your standard then I'm glad I brought this to light. At 630pm that sunday night the place was empty ok? Yes an empty restaurant can be unsettling for a patron to see. It can be indicative of something wrong or maybe not but that's a industry standard. I'm not misrepresenting anything ok? It was empty when we were eating there. Fact.

The turkey sandwich was pretty good, but not very exciting in terms of condiments or other extras that are nice to have in a sandwich. I liked the bread and the coleslaw, but wasn't a huge fan of the pickle. It sounds from other reviews that service is a problem, but the servers were all very pleasant, and everything came very rapidly.

Came here on a sunday night and it was empty. Empty at a regular dinner time. eek. Location. Sucks. It's sort of in no man's land which maybe why it was empty? So the staff gave us a plate at the beginning. one slice of smoke meat each. Wow it was divine. So we order a Smoke duck platter and Smoke meat reuben in the large portion. Upgraded the fries to a poutine. I've never had poutine before so I can't fairly rate it. It's the fries with a sauce(onion soup sauce?) and small cheese balls. I kind of liked it, it was interesting. Fries are average in my opinion. It's the thin kind that usually is not evenly cooked. You get crispy ones, you get soggy ones. When you order the your meal you can select the fattiness of the meat. We asked the waitress which one she gave us at the beginning, she had no clue. So we go for medium. Mistake, I would recommend go fatty or just don't eat these type of meals. To be honest, I didn't like the smoke duck pastrimi meat. It was fatty and tender but I feel it was like smoke bologne to me. The smoke meat is better IMO. Service. It was empty so the staff was daydreaming. When you got their attention they are friendly but having to yell at them to get their attention as they are hanging at the front door staring aimless at the street and still not hearing you?(take breath) Spicy mustard. I only knew it was available because of other's reviews. Ahem I shouldn't have to ask for spicy mustard. Stop being cheapskates. Plus have a better quality spicy mustard. Bread. The bread they use is pretty mediocre. No taste, not toasted. The weak link of the sandwich or platter. I have tried Katz's and the famous one in Montreal(forget name) and sure they are light years better than here. But this is as good as it gets I think in China. It's very good. Would I come back? Maybe.. I think it's not for everyone so you might get a veto vote when going as a group. Location is not so convenient.

A carnivores wet dream. Succulent moist meat! Food Porn at it's finest. Went to Tock's for lunch at 1 yesterday. Weather was fine, the place jampacked. And we all know how hard it is to get a good sandwich in Shanghai, let alone a properly executed Ruben. What happend next...i did not see that coming and i am still in awe...the Sasha Grey of smoked meat sandwiches. You can still opt between lean medium and fat meat (depending on your health-coverage). Perfectly cut slices of moist fragrant pink meat, layer folded on layer..with the right amount of "kraut" and nestled between rye bread. This monster was only to be conquered with unhinged jaws...and wanted to be taken bite by bite by bite. You still have the choice between 2 mustards (normal and spicy)- but truly..this combination of flavors needed just a lot of TLC..you also get a side of finely cut fries and coleslaw/pickle..and those are delicious sides ! All this food-orgasm comes at a price, but hey, this quality is well worth it. One tiny suggestion maybe..if the rye was ever so lightly toasted ..it would most likely hold better together and add another texture (and fragrance).....I will be back soon for more indepth market research! C’est tiguidou.

I spent 4+years in Montreal at the start of my career. Montreal smoked meat is an iconic part of the city. I went to the MTL Deli a little apprehensive, would it be a big let down. NO, it was great. I had the big smoked meat platter and it took me back to my youth. Brian has some other interesting other meats like Duck, that I must try next time. One thing I missed, no old waiters shouting at me in a mixture of English, French and Yiddish as they did in Montreal.

went there today again with some coworkers. this time, i ordered the smoked meat club sandwich that came with a generous portion of yummy fries and we all shared a smoked meat poutine with meat sauce. the club sandwich was good because it provided some sort of vegetable in the otherwise all meat and starch meal but honestly i prefer the reuben over the club sandwich. the lettuce and tomatoes were slightly lacking in proportion to the meat in the sandwiches whereas in the reuben, there were a huge portion of sauerkraut in the sandwich. as for the smoked meat poutine, it was definitely better than the original poutine. there was a stronger taste and the fries were crunchier rather than soggy. all in all, a decent meal

Came here for a quick bite to eat between preparing for an event in the neighborhood. Was actually also referred to the restaurant by my boss from Toronto (his wife is good friends with the parents of Tock's owner). Ordered the Combination Sandwich and Poutine to share. Great value and great food. The sandwich was very authentic. The poutine can be better but I've had my fair share of good poutine that I'm probably especially picky about the way it's made. I love the interior design and appreciate the small and quaint atmosphere created. Will definitely be going again.

Love the smoked meat here! If this place was in Jing'an and I would go every week. Deli coleslaw, pickles, and chip wagon style fries all on point as well. Poutine is a miss but who cares, the meat here is so so good. One thing, I wish the owner would put out some white vinegar for the fries!! That's how Canadians do it and I was sorely missing it on the table.

went there for lunch today with a coworker. i ordered the rueben sandwich with an upgrade of poutine rather than a simple side of fries. i chose the meat to be half fat for the sandwich. i was hoping to get that little platter of meat so i can choose what kind of meat i want for my sandwich but they didn't have that option. the food came really quickly and it was really good. the sandwich was huge and they had a ton of sauerkraut. the poutine that came as a side seemed to be a whole extra dish because the portion was so large. it was pretty decent but not really worth the extra money. tocks is really close to work so i might stop by again but i might want to try some of the other selections such as the plain smoked meat sandwich or the smoked meat pasta that also looked pretty good.

If you've ever had to defrost the lock to your front door, teared up at the sight of a Mountie in Red Surge or yelled at a hockey puck; this is the place for you. Montreal smoked meat and poutine are a huge part of life for Canadians, especially those who are from Quebec or Eastern Ontario. Tock's does both to perfection! The smoked meat is succulent, smokey and savory. The poutine is made with seriously legit fries (better than any other french fry in all of China), the gravy is slightly on the sweet side (this is forgivable - almost pleasing) AND "Taber-F$@&" real cheese curds!!! How do these guys do it? S. T. c'est bonne ca! Service was shaky but friendly and the complimentary plate of three slices of meat that arrived right when we sat down was a reminder of why this is one of my favorite things to eat of al time. My expectations for Tock's were sky high and they blew the roof off my expectations. I'll be back again again. This place does for smoked meat what Stubb's wanted to do for BBQ.... but Tock's actually succeeds. If they can keep the quality up and their prices right where they are they will be one of those rare regional-transplant successes. By the way; you can choose how fat you would like your meat. That just made me giggle. LOVE TOCK'S!
