Description -
Wang Qing’s fantastical, detailed acrylic works showing at ART LABOR Gallery are a record of the sometimes contradictory and always inspired mindset of a Chinese national who spent almost 20 years living and working in Tokyo. Taking from almost every style and historical and cultural source, the works are an eclectic display of all manner of day dreams and fantasy, sharp cross-cultural observation, literally an endless gaze into the inner thoughts of an artist in a foreign culture. His skilled brush records in a curiously effective combination of classical figurative, modern manga and original color, the curious minutiae and the obvious, the contradictions of national pride and personal insecurity, inspiration and defeat, rejection, acceptance and friendship.
