Japanese artist Koichi Numata's oil paintings reference a bleak, uncertain future. Hazy, melancholy figures suggest an unenviable path humanity may be going down, though the figures retain their integrity, leaving the viewer with a faint hope for better days.

ART LABOR gallery, Shanghai, is very pleased to present new work by talented Japanese artist Koichi NUMATA. His oil paintings reference past color-field and minimalist heroes, while juxtaposing more figurative, yet even more fantastical beings in future-world landscapes, places we have yet to realize. In his words “We are aiming towards the light and future, but we cannot reach it. Humans are still and always lost and searching for something… we are incomplete, but we should find silence and serenity within [ourselves]. My paintings are melancholic, yet romantic… and hopeful.”
Opening party SATURDAY Nov. 17th, 2007 17:00 – 20:00
