In his performances and installations, Shao Yi, artist from Hangzhou, often refers to spiritual meditation, body and mind endurance, as well as perception. In Tomb (冢), the artist bores a cave at a tomb’s former location and buries himself in it with candles and incense. The cave is covered with concrete, confining him for 25 hours. In Expand (拓), Shao Yi’s body is covered with layers of rice paper and painted in black revealing the corporal texture. This ‘slough’ is then taken away and framed. Shao Yi also drives spectators’ attention towards details, playing with their senses: Lost Voice (失声) is presented as a Chinese opera without sound: actors move and act on the stage in silence, the dialogues are displayed on both sides of the scene. Spectators have to focus on body gestures, face expressions, and other details, that are usually ignored, drifting in the silence. Perception and instinct are challenged when public has to cross a bridge concealed under a layer of fog (Broken Bridge 断桥) or enter a silent, empty room which sounded noisy from the outside (Don’t Enter 别进来). More recently, the artist realized a series of portrait of mentally handicapped people, wearing business suits (Intervention 介入常常). For his solo exhibition in BizArt, Shao Yi will produce a new work.
