Description

Route Eight-O-Nine, an exhibition by Italian photographer Umberto Stefanelli, is most certainly out of the ordinary. Each of its compositions is unique starting from the paper which is either painted, gilded or treated in some way by the artist before the emulsion of the photograph is applied. The result are unique and vibrant works of art which are alive and highly three-dimensional.

We also encounter certain uniqueness in the perspective of the artist upon the images and objects he works on, a perspective that alludes to the different inflections of the concept of beauty: of beauty par excellence, seen in the female figure wrapped in both in Western and Chinese fashion. Of beauty perceived through the awareness of its fragility, in the decomposing body of an almost-human-looking fish whose vitality is celebrated in the moment in which it ceases to exist. And last, of beauty seen through the aesthetic of the functional object, as are the banknotes with the effigy of Mao Tse-Tung.

Umberto Stefanelli developed his artistic skills in New York with his very own personal style of photography, re-elaborating his images using innovative techniques and always closely tied to the magical instant developing of Polaroid film. Route Eight-O-Nine´s title derives from the large format instant film (Polaroid 809) the artist has been using for over fifteen years.

Umberto’s technique is ideal for photographic portraits and has made him one of the most innovative portrait photographers on the international art scene.

Italian photographer Umberto Stefanelli begins his photographic compositions with a uniquely treated piece of paper--be it painted or gilded, or treated in some way by the artist before the emulsion of the photograph is applied. The artist then carefully applies the gelatin layer from Polaroid film to complete his innovative rendition of portraits.

"I start off by preparing the paper for the background--in this case, I used gold leaf," says Italian photographer Stefanelli. Then, he carefully peels off the top gelatin layer of a Polaroid photograph and delicately applies it to the paper. "No two pieces are the same," he explains, " as I cannot remake an individual piece identical to another." Why is this exhibition titled "Route eight O nine"? It is named after the large format instant film (Polaroid 809) that the artist has been using for over 15 years. -- Issue 10 Explain Your Art
