Wednesday, June 11 and Thursday, June 12, 9pm Blood Drum Spirit: A Harmonious Medley of Global Sounds
Blood Drum Spirit are impossible to classify, inventing a unique genre that incorporates global musical influences into the African American tradition. With both original and historic compositions, a Blood Drum Spirit performance channels Korean nong ak drumming, Brazilian meringue, and pretty much everything in between: Chinese Kunqu opera percussion, Gaelic bodhran rhythms, Philippine kulintang ensemble instruments and timbres and Japanese taiko drumming, to name a few. The common thread throughout is African American musical flavour, from New Orleans blues to New York City jazz and hip hop.
Percussionist Royal Hartigan, saxophonist David Bindman, bassist Wes Brown and pianist Art Hirahara are returning to China for the launch of Blood Drum Spirit’s latest album, blooddrumspirit: the royal hartigan ensemble live in china. The album was recorded in 2006, on the group’s third China tour, and captures highlights of their performances in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Hong Kong. With their technical prowess, encyclopedic cultural catalogue, and knack for improvisation, Blood Drum Spirit’s performance at the Glamour Bar is sure to be a treat for musical globetrotters.
