Synopsis of Chinese Original Opera The Wager

On a chilly New Year’s Eve with flying snowflake over the sky, Zhao, a landlord and his family were enjoying the snow and music after dinner. Suddenly a beggar in rags went begging into his residence. Zhao gave alms to the beggar while curiosity occurred to him.

He asked the beggar, “Why wasn’t you killed by the freezing cold?” The beggar answered, “Thanks to my luck.” Zhao didn’t believe it. Thus, a big wager happened on property and life: a five-acreage farm, a big house and a pawnshop would be paid to the beggar upon his staying in the yard for a whole night or if he died he just deserved that. At last the beggar won the game, becoming a new landlord and married a beautiful wife.

Two years passed and there came another bitter winter night. Zhao invited the new landlord and his wife to enjoy the snow with his family. They recalled what happened 2 years ago and decided to gamble again. The rule was same as the former one except the return of all he got if he lost this time. Not being able to resist the temptation the new landlord started the gambling again.

During the midnight, he died.
