Alec Haavik Friction Five

CD Launch: "Ye Shanghai" July 24, 2008

Launch Party on July 24, 10pm, at JZ Club.

The magic of Alec Haavik's first two years on the scene in Shanghai has been captured in this first release by his Shanghai band, Friction Five. This music sprouted, grew, and blossomed in the fantastic jazz venue of JZ Club Shanghai, where Alec Haavik Friction Five has been in weekly residence since 2005 (originally every Tuesday night, later moving to Thursday night).

Audiences at JZ Club and music festivals around China have seen Haavik play saxophone while lying on his back, run laps around the club in the middle of a tune, imitate his baby son sleeping on stage, rap about putting bread in the freezer, and even travel to other dimensions.

Alec's original compositions spring from life experiences -- spiritual, mundane, and surreal -- from the birth of his son, to a ride on a Shanghai city bus, to a magic restaurant that exists only in the imagination.

The band (and the CD) is reflective of the international music community in Shanghai, featuring musicians from the U.S.A., China, Brazil, and Norway. Rising star Sinne Eeg of Denmark lends her vocal talents to the techno-jazz track "Exotic Wall Burger", a Haavik original composition.

The title track "Ye Shanghai" is a hit song from a 1942 Chinese movie musical, and has become the ultimate anthem to Shanghai nightlife. There are also 'Friction-ified' versions of songs by Diana Ross, Led Zeppelin, and even Kenny G. Yes -- Led Zeppelin and Kenny G on the same CD!
