In jazz, there are a number of tunes that have a long and privileged history in the music. These tunes have been played over and over, by musicians all over the world, and are called standards. An essential part of being a jazz musician is knowing these standards and how to play them.

What is the best way to approach the jazz repertoire? How should musicians learn new music? How can they “get inside” the jazz repertoire, and make it their own? In this workshop, Murray James will discuss strategies for approaching new music. He will take a topical approach to learning the jazz repertoire, while covering a handful of tunes that every jazz musician should know. Among the topics covered will be:

* Interpreting new heads and making melodies;
* Approaches to harmony and chord changes;
* Getting in touch with the history of the music;
* Playing and interacting as a group.

The tunes that will be covered in this workshop are: Satin Doll, Billie’s Bounce and Blue Bossa. A handout with an extended list of tunes, ordered into sections by level of difficulty, will also be provided.
