Wednesday, July 9th at 7 pm A NOVEL, A FILM: The Duchess of Langeais by Honoré de Balzac and Jacques Rivette.
“A Novel, A Film” is a reading of key scenes from a French novel and a presentation of the corresponding movie scenes, followed by a discussion and analysis of a director’s choices when bringing a book to the screen.
A veteran of the Nouvelle Vague, Jacques Rivette directed The Duchess of Langeais when close to 80 years old. For the film, conceived as his last, he chose a novella by Balzac, first published in 1834 and republished as part of the collection Histoire des Treize in 1843. From a Spanish convent to the drawing rooms of a coquettish Parisian lady of the Boulevard Saint Germain, the film is a brilliantly directed recreation of the novella, strengthened by the performances of two rising stars of the new young generation of French actors (Guillaume Depardieu and Jeanne Balibar).
In French with Chinese translation.
