CONTEST CLOSED

CW is teaming up with China Spring Tour to give readers a chance to win a pair of ticket to the soccer (read: football) quarter finals in Beijing on Aug. 16 at 6pm or the semi-finals in Shanghai on Aug. 19 at 6pm. If you've passed up on Olympic opportunities before, don't miss this final chance to get tickets to the games of the year.

To Win:

Simply answer the following question in the comment section below. The top answer in each city (Beijing & Shanghai) will win a ticket to attend the games! Preference given to those who are active in the City Weekend online community and all winners will have to provide copies of their passports to receive their tickets per Chinese Government regulations. Winners will be notified Aug. 8

Here's the Question:

All things being equal, which Olympic soccer team will take home the gold and why?

Cameroon will definitely win for three reasons:

  1. Their social register is not very reliable (according to their birth certificates even the team from Italy 1990 world cup is under 23) so they can bring any player to the games. I think Eto'o will turn 18 next December.
  2. They'll feel the weather is cool and breezy, while the other teams are wetter than a mailman's sock.
  3. In Cameroon golden medals are actually a very trendy accessory (Mr. T style), so there's an additional incentive to spur the team.

England, because after forty years of misery and heartbreak our perpetual raincloud will clear away, gently parted by the not-at-all-phallic skyscrapers of Pudong to bring forth a new dawn for footballing in the nation that invented it.

Oh wait, the UK doesn't even field a team for the Olympics, owing to the fact that its four constituent nations play separately in international tournaments. Um, China then. I hear the team is especially scientific and harmonious this year.

Cote D'Ivoire: 1. They're Elephants: really, that's their team name 2. They actually dance and celebrate when they score 3. The oldest player is 28, with an average team age of approx.25 4. Drogba..enough said 5.They have participated in the two highest scoring penalty shoot-outs in international football competition: the 24-shot shoot-out in the 1992 African Cup of Nations Final, and the 24-shot shoot-out in the 2006 African Cup of Nations 1/4 final

I'm going with Iraq. Of course, they aren't going to (and can't because of their being banned) take home the ACTUAL gold medal, BUT the Iraqi Soccer team are the REAL winners because they don't have to battle the pollution/traffic/and Dal! L@ma's henchmen... they have their own battles to face. That being said: Go USA! (Women's)

Brazil: In the beginning there was--in the end there will always be. We have to admit they have some of the best players on board. It'd be nice to see Ronaldhino finally get his gold too.

BRAZIL! 1. Yellow is a nice colour in the sea of Red. 2. Players from major soccer/football clubs are in the squad(Man U, R Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern M, AC Milan, R Betis, Man City, Liverpool!....) 3. Ronaldinho and Robinho! Enough said. 4. I think this is their time to win it finally for the first time! 5. China will finally get a taste of SAMBA soccer in real competitive match!

China...of course!!! China plays a big financial role with most countries of the world (especially all the countries with teams playing), so China technically already has the Gold and should show the world audience how easy it is to walk away with even more Gold!

Australia...BHP Biliton has the honour of making the Olympic medals, and word on the street is that they have "negotiated" a sweet deal to Chinese government as long as the Aussies walk away with a Gold medal in soccer/football.

Jamaica...the land of Rastafarians and Bobsled champions! They deserve a gold in any sport, and them winning it in soccer will definitely mean another blockbuster movie in the future

US team....why not? They will need to win since the "professional" basketball team will lose to Iraq, and it's the only place in the world where "soccer" means "football"

It will be a 3-way tie...the first in history for Olympic competition. The truth will come out many months later that all the players decided to "draw" during a rowdy night at Zapatas, so they could stay in Shanghai even longer!

ghana - because michael essien is a beast and the first professional african soccer player comes from ghana (1889)

The boys from Brazil will dance through to the semis with their impressive array of talent from some of the top European sides. Once in Shanghai they'll locate a Brazilian Steak House (the all-you-can-eat kind) and feed themselves into a Samba frenzy. Consequently, this will produce performances of grandeur in the final two matches leading to an inevitable Brazilian gold!

Impossible is Nothing

Sixteen teams, and only one gold, The tournament rule: just don’t be too old. As for the winner, they haven’t a clue, But my friends keep on saying, smart money’s on blue. Not Italy of course, they’re boring as sin, And Honduras don’t know, what contest they’re in. Japan are eager, yet unlikely to shine. Don’t cry at me ‘tina, it’s boring to whine. Cameroon are pacy, but won’t stand the test, And Brazil are deceived, in thinking they’re best. The Coast are right up there, along with the Dutch, But in fairness their chances, are kicked into touch, By China no less, I can sense the surprise, But in less than a month, when you’re a little more wise, You’ll see what I’m saying, hail China as best, As you watch them take gold, and see off the rest.

Argentina will win for two reasons: One - they invented football and, apparently, fire and the wheel (all in the same week according to their textbooks). Two - They have the backing of the biggest ball (not ball player) in the world; of course I speak of Diego Maradona whose weight over the years has become larger than the Falklands. Ipso facto, their audacity of delusional overconfidence coupled with the very real threat of Diego eating rival football players' family members, combine to place Argentina with the best opportunity to win a gold medal (gold also being a substance which they first discovered... of course).

Great Britain will take home the gold medal in soccer just as they did 100 years ago during the 1908 London Games, where Great Britain defeated Denmark to claim the first soccer gold medal. As soccer has been part of every Olympic Games program ever since their first victory, it's fitting Great Britain take gold again in 2008.
