One unique thing I absolutely must do everytime before I leave town... hmmmm...
I have not one, not two, but three cats in total and it's sad to leave them behind when my wife and I go away. (But while we're gone, my wife's parents stop by the house to pay them a visit to feed and check up on them.) Usually, my cats know when we're about to leave Shanghai. They sit on our suitcases while we are trying to pack, they start meowing and go into fits, I think they also shed and extra amount of their fur on our clothes we're trying to pack just to piss us off... Mei Ban Fa...
Besides giving them an extra bit of food and water before we go, I continuously tell them, "HELLO" over and over again. (I do this in hopes that they'll say hello back - I've seen cats say hello on youtube... it works if you teach 'em right!)
But I also continuously say hello so they don't feel like we are saying goodbye and that we're leaving them forever... Whether or not they truly understand my intentions, I'm not sure, I'm no a cat whisperer! But, they calm down after a while and then we head out. Unique... strange maybe, but it's all about caring for our furry friends.

Make sure I have my Starwood Card and the things I "borrowed" from my last Sheraton stay so that I can return them! KJ

Actually I am quite frightened of flying and for some reason cannot stop thinking about the airplane turning into a flaming fireball at any moment while sitting in my cramped economy seat for a 14hr flight of fear so...........everytime before I leave Shanghai, I reserve a window table for 1 on the 56th floor of the Jin Mao Tower (Grand Hyatt) Tower at the Cucina restaurant, order myself a bottle of Italian Red and usually a plate of their handmade pasta and gaze out over the city lights that I have spent over 8 years of my life in and thank God for letting me have all the great experiences in this awesome town---after 2/3's of the wine is gone....I start praying to God that he'll let me get back here in one piece to have more fantastic experiences... So far, it's worked everytime!!

-
Make a checklist of things I need to pack an hour before I actually leave for my plane/train!

How to make arriving home as pleasant as your holiday itself -
I prepare my arrival home by cashing in a hard-earned favor. I kindly ask someone to do work i should be doing instead of going on holiday for me, as a favor.
That way, I takes away all my "guilt" and problems whilst on holiday and make the arrival back so much nicer =)
Not your typical "water my plants"/"answer my phone" of course.
PS: This requires you to be a nice guy who deserves favors and does them for others... And doesn't go on holiday too often ;)

This is what I do:
I go to a tailor couple days before and make a custom tailored shirt, style according to where I am going. Sometimes, it's a shirt, cuff link, pointy, or player-ish, etc. Somtimes, it's a neck tie, slim, power, or classic, etc.
Every new place, I wear new shirt or tie. And I reserve that shirt or tie for that city only.

I must make sure the bathroom is spotless. Here's the thing: when one has guests over- which on returning home, could be as soon as I unlock the front door, the bathroom/toilet is an important deciding factor, with regards to first impressions.

Everytime I have to make up a good reason for my company that I absolutely have to join that congress in Sanya, Rio, Maledives... and that all the hotels are booked except those 5 star spa resorts. Furthermore those congresses also require to make heavy use of the mini bar, room service and the surrounded attractions.

I have to use my broadband Internet connection to finish answering travellers' questions on the various China-related travel forums that I'm posting on, as well as finish answering all my email. Otherwise it's really difficult for me to do so back home in Singapore since I don't have Internet connection at home and have to lug my laptop around to use the free wi-fi at libraries and shopping malls! Seriously though, I miss meeting up with travellers when I'm not in China. No one needs to be helped around Singapore, but everyone appreciates being helped around China!

Ok, let's try this again! I have only been living in Shanghai for six months and two days, so I haven't had the chance of leaving yet. I would have to grab a beer and my camera and hop on the top level of the number 1 bus. It's such a great way to see the city and there are plenty of photo-ops. It's especially fun when the weather is nice....unlike today!

-
1 day before the travel, I will have yoghurt for morning, lunch and dinner and bring out all my burdens the night before so I would have a worry free traveling the next day.

If my friends know I’m leaving, I must make absolutely sure to lock and bring with me the hidden key I keep for emergencies, unless I want to host an open house party, sponsor all-night free flow drinks, encourage table-dancing, bed-wrestling and bathtub-swimming, exasperate the neighbors, trigger the fire alarms, provoke a riot with the police and get evicted without even knowing about it… until finding evidence tape blocking my door and my picture on top of a wanted poster upon my return. Not that it has ever happened, of course…

I always check City Weekend to make sure I won't be missing anything exciting.

Wow, so many people entering! I am very impressed!

-
to have a foot massage because it will feel much better on the plane particularly long-haul flight, which i may have a body massage instead. it also helps to prevent jet lag. it works, try!
-
-
I always have to pinch myself (in the right palm, on the left eyebrow, and under the right big toe) just to remind myself that this journey of life is "real" and not a dream...and I get to experience another fabulous place to explore and embrace and enjoy (which, this time, happens to be Bali...as I leave for the airport in a few hours)

Drunken Go-Karting at the park near Zhongshan Gongyuan
-
-
Ensure my house is immaculate and welcoming so that when I return I will feel as if I am still enjoying my break away.
-
-
the one unique thing i always do before leaving town is order the www.citydeli.cn turkey & avocado and bring it on the plane with me. airplane food is not my favorite so an occasional doggie bag with my favorite sandwich in shanghai normally does trick. since the sandwich is so big, i save half and upon arrival have my favorite 5 star hotel staff reheat it for me in an oven which makes it taste just as good as when it was first made.
-
-
The one unique thing for me is to actually look forward to coming back to Shanghai before I leave which is a FIRST in many years of overseas living.
-
-
Make my bed.
-
-
The unique thing to do is not doing anything special on purpose for a trip! Sometimes i just need to pack my bag, take my ipod and jump on a train or plane and go wherever i feel like to. A trip out of the town deserves more inspiration other than planning, which we do almost all the time in our other daily "nomal" life. So just go and enjoy!
ok, if you do want to know sth. specific, then it'll be that make sure i take charger for my ipod. I can never leave the music.
-
-
for sure a mani and pedi and depending on where i go also facial and massage (if going back to europe not when going to thailand =)) and another thing for sure is a dinner a tenya - it's so delicious and always miss the food when away

Every time I leave the town, there must be a reason-- being fed up with the routine cycles of 1,2,3...and kind of losing the real ME in the familiar surroundings. -- So Every time I leave the town, the unique thing I will do is Leaving the "Blue" me behind ---taking New Mixed CDS ,NotePat, Recorder& Camera--- to find ME& Smiles back together :)

not that I don't trust her - and I really think it is a funny shirt - but everytime I leave for a trip I still hide my gf's T-Shirt which says "My bf is out of town"...

Congratulations njpirzada, you're our Sheraton Suzhou cover prize winner!

Oh my GOD! I cant believe it. Its the first time i ever took part in a contest. Thaaaanx!

"Make my bed"?????? Judge(s), what the heck are you taking...sleeping pills???
-
-
Learn to be happy for other. Dont act like a loser! Oh arent you a loser???

YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING! make my bed??? I thought the question was ONE UNIQUE THING......
Last time I waste my time on one of these. Good job CW.
-
-
I also don't agree "Make my bed" is a unique thing.
I go for hkbarhopper!
-
-
njpirzada, it has nothing to do with "learn to be happy for other"...it's all about sharing something "unique" before leaving town...and your response is far from unique!!!
As for CW management, either get someone creative to think up the question (this was a silly question) and bright enough to know what a creative response is...OR just get your viewing audience to vote!
-
-
How I understood the question was 'a unique thing you must absolutley do' so making a bed is something that one can absolutely do everytime. But pinching yourself and getting facials, massage etc could sometimes be missed. So, i think 'make my bed is one simple unique thing'.
-
-
To add my answer to the question would be "turning off the power switches (except for the refrigerator) and gas connections of my house to save cost and to avoid accidental short-curcuit"
I know I am late as the contest has already been closed but I do agree with judges decision on this one.
-
-
Agree that this def isn't 'unique'...where are the points for creativity?
-
-
"Make my bed", obviously things are slipping around these contests...that is a ridiculous answer, I am done with these as well....stupid...
-
-
haha. clearly this contest is rigged. i guess it pays to be friends with the cityweekend moderators. at least they could have been smarter about this and had their "friend" come up with a more intelligent answer. just goes to show the mental capacity of readers and editors of this fine magazine. good job!

Go running outside, so as to get chin splints and coughing fits, and really appreciate wherever I'm going, as long as it's out of Shanghai
