My favorite place is this little garden hidden down an alley off Changshu Lu. The garden actually belongs to the opera school there, but no one ever uses it. We used to go play soccer there sometimes, but it's a big grassy area perfect for laying out a blanket and watching clouds crawl over the sky. The alley is just north of Changle Lu, south of the Hilton. There is a Bifengtang resto there. Can't miss it. My favorite spot.

Definitely the outside area on top of Barbarossa, where you have one of the best nightlife views of city architecture...while relaxing back in a comfortable space

Strolling down any funky alley, off most bustling main streets. This is where China still glows with tradition and energy

I like Lianhua lu--directly outside the metro station. All the vendors and loud motorcycle drivers bring life to the place.

Shanghai beach - because it is beautiful place to spend a day (specially in summers) People are actually unaware of its existence which makes it off-the-beaten-path.

My favourite off-the-beaten-path spot in Shanghai is the SMP SKATEPARK. Try riding a bike or inline skating to the park - it'd take around 30-45 minutes from Wu Jiao Chang - and you'd love it. The park is great for anyone who enjoys extreme sports and simply anyone who wants to enjoy th sunset in a completely different place in Shanghai.

The North Bund because besides the Hyatt on the Bund (which definitely has the best views of Shanghai), it still remains quite off-the-beaten path and filled with Shanghai's hidden gems. This will soon change with many new office buildings being planned/developed in the area, in addition to the new port terminal. But, for now, I'm enjoying it while I still can!

Biyun Internationalized Residential Community in Pudong Gold Bridge, is my favourate place for its beautiful environment with greening coverage of as many as 70%. In this place, you can find all kinds of nice food and convenient for shopping and sports. The per-capita greenbelt area is large and air quality is far better than that in the downtown area.

One of the first places I saw when I came here was the old art-deco municipal slaughterhouse at shajing road in hongkou. The building has certainly seen its share of cruel moments, but the dark gotham city style facade doesn't even seem to try hiding this fact. It is now beautifully restored into a minimalist exhibition venue. Wandering along the building's slanted aisles, through which cattle was hushed through decades ago, has an eerie but also solemn quality to it.

Xian Qiang Fang is one of these places that people may know about, but don't necessarily take the time to go to - especially expats nowadays. I first went there in November and remember being pleasantly surprised by how well the restuarant has been maintained, and then again after seeing the quality of the Chinese opera performance. Great history, performances, and food, all in one venue! As Shanghai becomes more and more westernized, I think locals and visitors alike should take the time to see places, such as Xian Qiang Fang, that are still truly Shanghainese.
