Lots of good suggestions! We'd never even heard of half of these instruments before! We're going to go with silk_road and his suggestion of the san xian (we love the idea of George Benson going back and forth with the Chinese banjo). We're also going with gtmojo's idea of using the Gu Zhen, which is also one of our favorite Chinese instruments. Congrats, to silk_road and gtmojo! If one can call a voice an instrument, would be extremely fun to hear them singing pieces of chinese opera in the show. :)

I would like to see Al and George incorporate the San Xian (3 Strings) into their show. The sanxian is a traditional Chinese instrument, usually found in the North. It only has 3 strings and a neck without any frets. The coolest part of the whole instrument is that the body is covered with snakeskin.

The reason I chose this instrument is that it is close to the American Banjo in sound and it would truly take a jazz legend(s) to incorporate that kind of sound into any jazz show.

I'd love to see them use the Fou and the Pipa. The Fou because its complex rhythm patterns sound so amazing and unique- it'll be great to see it adapted to the jazz format. The pipa of course...can just get you into any jazzy mood...upbeat or soft..perfectly.

I would love to see Al and George showcase one or two local jazz performers. Their "instruments" are phenomenal and could bring attention to the emerging Shanghai jazz scene. What do you think Al? George?

It'd be fantastic if they could incorporate an entire Chinese orchestra into the gig and turn it into an exciting jam session.

It'd be interesting to see a fusion of different sounds, perhaps a duel between the Chinese and Western instruments, brought together by George and Al's amazing performance.

Erhu, a two-stringed bowed instrument. Jazz and erhu both classic.

Defintely the pipa !! Jazz is intrinsically better able to accommodate new elements of non-Western music and it would surely bring the house down in Shanghai to see legendary greats such as George Benson and Al Jarreau collaborating with pipa virtuosi Wu Man and Min Xiao-fen to create cross-cultural improvised jazz !!

I would like to see them incoporate the gong into their music, just becasue it's so hard to make the gong play center stage!

I would like to see them playing Bamboo flute or Er-Hu. I am curious to see if they can put a jazz twist on those two most representive Chinese instruments.

I'd like to see these two legends play the Chinese instrument Zhongyuan(中阮),cos this instrumental sounds like guitar but feels very Chinese, it is the most jazzy Chinese instrument that I know

I'd like the two jazz legends to incorporate any Chinese instrument they wish that is able to paint a jazz rendition of "Happy Birthday"...since I turn 50 on Sept 6! I couldn't think of a better place to be to celebrate a half-century of life!

Jazz legends like this need to express themselves naturally during their Shanghai performance....and what better way than to use their "natural voices" to sing Chinese Opera or cross-talk performance!

I'd love to see Al and George use the oldest Chinese instruments recorded in history...bronze bells! If they are going to perform to an audience that enjoys a 5000 yr old history, then they should certainly incorporate the richness of the Chinese history and culture into their performance!

Definitely the Gu Zhen. The gu zhen can have a light and soft sound to a heavy, thunderous sound, so it's quite versatile, which will match well with the type of jazz Benson and Jarreau will play. It is also quite full, kind of like a piano with all it's chords and all which might give their music a different sound overall.

I would like them to incorporate Dizi (笛子), because I like flute, but this one has a specific vibrating membrane (笛膜) on one hole (膜孔) and a wide harmonic range. It would give their session a distinctive Chinese mark, since this instrument is unique to Chinese music and widely used in Chinese Opera, but I am sure it would also be perfect in a jazz session.
