Description -
There is little divide between public and private in contemporary China. Take a walk in the streets of Shanghai today and you will find yourself amidst a colorful festival of families in pajamas eating from street side kitchens, and undergarments hung from apartment windows. Escape to your rented apartment only to browse monitored websites, or to eavesdrop on your neighbor’s conversations. In China’s growing urban landscape, private space is shrinking, and spreading onto the sidewalk. From September 7 to 17, 2008, Eastlink Gallery explores the conditions of contemporary space in ChinaDorm, featuring Chinese artists Lin Jing, Yu Fan, Yao Zi, Zhang Qing, and Zhang Zhaogong. As both exhibition and performance, Eastlink restructures itself as a dormitory and aims to discover the consequences of the closing and opening of space in contemporary Chinese society, and your own public role magnified, or possibly just foreshadowed, in a mirror of this society. Our ideas are many, from harmony to chaos, but, ultimately, what will result will depend on the participants. Opening Sunday, September 7, 2008 from 6 - 8 P.M.

This gallery is transformed into a dormitory as Chinese artists Lin Jing, Yu Fan, Yao Zi, Zhang Qing, and Zhang Zhaogong, through artwork and performance, express the consequences of the closing and opening of space in contemporary Chinese society and our individual public roles.

Eastlink aims to add a dynamic layer to Shanghai's growing art scene with ChinaDorm. Part performance art, part installation, Eastlink hopes this interactive space will raise expectations for all future art in Shanghai.
