City Weekend Says

Singing queers, here's the choir for you. Join this friendly group of gay and lesbian singers for their weekly sing-a-longs in Chinese and English (no worries if your Chinese isn't up to snuff - there's pinyin on the sheets), led by experienced gay/lesbian chorus conductor Jo. Open to all levels, the aim is to have fun and sing. This all culminates to a late June concert, though performance participation is optimal. Contact for further information.

Contributor Description

Singing queers! We hope to RE-START weekly choir practice of the Shanghai Gay & Lesbian Singers.

This gay/lesbian chorus' first aim is to HAVE FUN SINGING, and to provide yet another social outlet for Shanghai's increasingly diverse LGBT scene..

Because we want to include lots of people, we will be singing arrangements that are technically not too challenging, and selecting songs that are already somewhat familiar to participants. Think of the old folks who gather in Shanghai's parks on weekend mornings, singing the songs they love. We want to create a gay & lesbian version of this.

For expats interested in singing Chinese pop songs but who may need some assistance in getting these tunes down, we will try to provide on-line these songs' pinyin lyrics, video clips from Chinese sites like Tudou.com, and their Chinese-style musical scores (with numbers and underlines---though unfortunately few foreigners can read this notation). To help Chinese participants learn unfamiliar English songs, we'll try to give links to music videos posted on Youtube.com - like sites, and supply the English lyrics and scores ("5 line") on-line.

Note that if you don't feel comfortable appearing on stage in a gay/lesbian setting, we fully appreciate this: Actual performance is optional. Please come to the rehearsals anyway.

If you have a favorite song(s) you would like to suggest we sing, please share with us.
