千禧曼泼 – Millenium Mambo (2001)
Vicki is a young girl who’s relationship is stuck between her boyfriend Hao Hao and an older gangster, living a life of doing drugs and drifting between clubs in Taipei’s early days of 2001. Reminising over her life over the last 10 years, Vicki recalls the happenings and mishaps of her drugs and alcohol fueled life filled with conflict and uncertainty.
Director Hou Hsiao Hsien has always been considered as one of the leaders of what people call the Taiwanese New Wave Cinema. Millenium Mambo is an hypnotic movie about memories, a running theme in Hou’s films, of a period where everything was uncertain at beginning of the millenium, with stunning cinematography and soundtrack. Fresh entering the 10’s, Sub-Cinema invites you to go back in time with Vicky and reminise over the past decade.
