To increase awareness and raise funds for disaster relief, “Dance for Haiti” will be held on Friday, March 5 at 9pm at Zhijiang Dream Factory in Shanghai. The benefit performance features six locally-based bands, and will highlight the humanitarian response in the international community to the catastrophic earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti on January 12. The night’s scheduled lineup begins with French and American acoustic gypsy jazz trio Wayne’s Basement, followed by Shanghainese psychedelic rock experience Duck Fight Goose, followed by classic rock expat mainstays Studio 188, followed by pop-rock quartet Monroe Stahr, followed by reggae crossover sensation Lions of Puxi, and finishing with Xinjiang fusion rock idol Hassan’s trio—Weghur. Local promoters Three Chord Truth, together with media partner Touchmedia, venue partner Zhijiang Dream Factory, and charity partner Habitat for Humanity, have agreed to offer their services at no charge. Ticket price at the door is 100RMB, and the organizers will donate all proceeds from ticket sales to international aid efforts. Members of the Shanghai community who are interested in donating are encouraged to contact the charity organization of their choosing. “The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the international community’s response to this disaster,” says co-promoter Nathaniel Mallon. “By bringing together these 6 talented bands from all different styles and nationalities, we’re showcasing the best in local music, keeping positive and hopeful in times of catastrophe, while recognizing the gravity of the situation. And all the ticket sales will go to aid, of course.” The charity partner for the benefit is Habitat for Humanity, an international NGO that has been at work in Haiti for 26 years and will use its local expertise and mobilize resources to as part of the long-term recovery building efforts. Their representative in China will give a short presentation at the benefit show.
