Introduction:
Located south of Anhui Province, County Xiakeng is home to many small villages scattered amongst the streams and forested hills. It is a bucolic and tranquil area, and difficult to reach by public transport. Shitan village is one of the villages which is never to be found on the map.
March and April are about the best months to tour the area, when the golden rape flowers are in full bloom.
Seas of yellow flowers bloom from the top of the mountain down to the valley floor. Standing on the peaks of the mountains, it is possible to see waves of golden blossom, dotted with several old villages stretching away in the distance.
Against waves of golden rape flowers are typical rural scenes, men plowing fields, old farmers leisurely driving ducks toward a pond, girls washing clothes in the rivers under blooming peach trees, and smoke rising from farmhouse chimneys.
The area is dotted with Huizhou-style houses with white walls, black roofs, elegant eaves, dark green paving stones, all relics of the county??s glorious past.
