How about PK 14? Short for Public Kingdom for Teens (if you can't figure out the "for teens", slowly sound out 14, it took me a while, too!) They have been described as Sonic Youth meets Gang of Four (no, not Madame Mao's entourage), and have influences as diverse as the Talking Heads and Neil Young in their sound. A great punk band in China, that isn't afraid to sing it like it is! Give them a listen at:

The man not to miss is the busker by exit 7 at Lujiazui.Although not technically a band as much a one man show,he certainly has a style of his own. The Beatles once sang ‘what would you do if I sang out of tune?’ and if you have ever wondered the outcome of this question you should head down to see this guy. His repertoire ranges from English pop songs to classic Chinese love ballads to even the occasional original hit of his own. All slightly off key of course. Not only is his track list varied but his enthusiasm is boundless as he continues day after day regardless of whether he has earnt his day’s mao. For sheer staying power alone he is the best rock band China has to offer. Who else could stand the sheer indifference and unlyrical souls that are shanghai commuters? What would Shanghai do if you sang out of tune? Keep on walking by the looks of things.

cold faryland is a very nice band. Also SUBS is very cool band. the styles are not comparable, but both has its appeal! I hope you'll have a chance to listen to any of those and you'll see what I mean. Have fun and CU in SH

Because a recommendation for Banana Monkey would be redundant, I pass along the name, Plastic Chocolate, as a band worth seeing. The most memorable band from the Roots and Shoots show at Live bar, their tunes were polished and catchy and a good translation from west to east. Do I win?

Infadels, I have seen them 2 years ago in Benicassim Rock and Electro festival, Spain: energetic, a slice of dark and original... Worth seeing them on stage !!
