Urban Landscapes: Spanish Shanghai Description
The legacy of the Spanish architect Abelardo Lafuente.
Álvaro Leonardo Pérez, architect and researcher, presents the life and works of Abelardo Lafuente García Rojo (1871-1931), who was the only Spanish architect and builder in Shanghai during the republican years in China. In spite of a difficult beginning, his perseverance and lucidity permitted his introduction of a Mozarabic style that would eventually gain world popularity in the 1920s. Lafuente is well-known for an intimate relevance to Antonio Ramos Espejo, the Spanish entrepreneur who brought the cinema into China, whom he designed a spectacular mansion, several theatres, and projection halls for. This guided tour will show examples of the architect’s work such as: the Star Garage and the dance hall at the Hotel Astor House.
The tour will be conducted in both spanish and english.
