On the Doorstep Undoubtedly we have all walked past stray kittens on the street, lamented their sad circumstances, and continued walking. One day, on a stroll through my apartment complex, I bumped into a friendly little tri-coloured kitten who meowed sweetly at me, likely sensing that I was a kind-hearted individual (read: sucker). I forced myself to walk away from her but, low and behold, two days later on a chilly evening she showed up inside my apartment building on the steps outside MY apartment. What were the chances? I took her in and began the arduous process of cleaning her up.

But therein lay the rub. As sweet as she was, my future in Shanghai at the time was still uncertain and I now had the responsibility of seeing to it that this teeny two-pounder found a good home. Through a colleague, I was introduced to the SCAA. They were extremely helpful and informative and with their aid, my little friend was nursed back to health and adopted out to a nice family.

The SCAA takes great care in ensuring that those who adopt animals will be responsible pet owners. The organization cannot sponsor every animal that crosses their path; it is as a friend of mine reminded me, "You can't save every kitten in Shanghai." But the SCAA certainly tries. For those animal lovers who are unable to commit to adopting an animal, foster parenting or volunteering are great options and the SCAA is always glad to have more help from soft-hearted suckers like you and I.
