I've been to The Kitchen a number of times, and I love it! Both the Chinese and Western classes are wonderful.

Each person has an entire station with everything - cutting board, stove, pots/wok, etc - so that you really do everything yourself from start to finish, and they are great about explaining the logic behind certain steps. All of this is really useful, since it helps me improve my cooking overall, and I can apply what I learn in class to other things I cook at home.

Everyone is very laid back, fun, and absolutely unpretentious - (it's possible to love great food without being a food snob!) and so it's easy to ask questions and learn a lot. Miranda, who runs the place, provides English interpretation, but it's also a chance for me to practice and learn a little bit of Chinese too. You can either book a private session with your friends, or drop in to a weekly menu class and meet new people. The house is very cozy and comfortable, and eating outside in the garden is a true pleasure. And the food is always so so delicious...I have a hard time believing I made it myself sometimes...

My husband and I had a delightful experience at The Kitchen on our recent trip to Shanghai. We had arranged for a private class over the internet. Miranda Yao met us at our hotel and took us on a most interesting and informative tour of a local market. Afterwards we spend several happy hours in The Kitchen observing and helping Chef Zhou prepare several Chinese dishes. Miranda interpreted. This morning was one of the highlights of our our trip to Shanghai.
