This three-floor microbrewery has some of the best beers in Puxi. They’ve got good American pub grub, bar games and at least three of their micro-brews on tap at all times. Check out their patio in the summer when they get the barbecue going outdoors.

Believe it or not, there is more to beer than Tsingtao and, in Shanghai, we have Boxing Cat Brewery to thank for that. This popular brewery, which is now soft opening its second location on Fuxing Lu, brews its own beer on the premises. If you can’t decide between the four beers on tap, opt for the sampler (¥45), which is as generously portioned as the food on their down-home Southern menu. While the Wild Mild Ale thrilled and the Ol’ Smoky Porter made us fantasize about barbecued ribs, their Right Hook Helles Lager won us over. Master Brewer Gary Heyne has crafted an über-drinkable thirst quencher that even your umbrella-drink-loving girlfriend will like. This light, refreshing lager is malty and golden, with just the perfect amount of carbonation to keep it fresh. Manager Lee Tseng recommends pairing it with a plate of their Fists of Fury chicken wings. There’s no aftertaste, just pure, uncomplicated pleasure, which is more than most can say about their other summer dalliances. Lingbo Li

Fried chicken is pretty tasty. Deserts are good too. The hamburger is not good at all...filled with tendons and using cheap meat (since it's filled with tendons). Things on the menu are hits or misses..just be careful how you choose. Loud atmosphere too.

Celebrated my birthday here last Saturday... It was TERRIBLE! I ordered my food (a hamburger) and after 1.5 hours it never arrived to I decided to cancel it, when the bill arrived they charged it so I told the waiter to take it off the bill as I never received it, after a while she said that it was ok that but that she would pay for the hamburger out of her own money... i felt bad and still gave her the hamburger money, after a while, as we were a large group we decided to pay as we ordered, I ordered a beer and instantly paid, and my change never came back, when i asked the waiter about my change, (same as the hamburger problem) she said she had already given it to somebody else, i asked around nobody got it, so of course i still demanded for my change, and then again after a while she said she would have to give it out of her own pocket, being the second time i didn't believe it and still demanded my change

There is one possibility out of 3:

  1. Management charges their waiters for problems they had in the kitchen (hamburger situation)

  2. The waiter was stealing the money

  3. The waiter is rich and can pay for the hamburger that never came, and the change that she "gave" to someone else...

Cheese grits. I haven't had cheese grits in ten years. Served with short ribs, this was one of the best western meals I've had in China. Sharp, hoppy glass of IPA to wash it down with sure didn't hurt either. I had the pulled pork sandwich the time before and it nearly brought tears to my eyes. I really did cry on the way back to Pudong, though...

Free pneumonia with every glass! This was a nice place in the summer, but thanks to cheap construction and inadequate heat, most patrons who arrive in the winter have to keep their coats and hats on. Are the owners so poor that they have to treat customers like this?

Great locally brewed beer for rmb45, I wouldn't ask for more in Shanghai. Enjoyed every time we hang out there. Very good nachos too!! The only thing I don't like about them is choices for beer is getting less and less each time I go. Please keep up the good work!

We went there for the 3rd time last weekend, and always enjoyed it. I know I shouldn't compare to the quality back home, but I still hope they offer most of the choices on the menu daily, and making the beer even more flavorful (is it because of the water here?). Nachos was great, and went very nicely with beer. Price is very reasonable.

Love the Burger! Unfortanately my friends were not so lucky with their meals. But excellent customer service, which is rare to find. Wish they had the pale ales available more often. Pulled Pork mini sandwiches are great too.

I went to Boxing Cat Brewery last week night, I had their special smoked beef and my friend got braised short ribs that was recommended by Ellaine. After we finished dinner,I went downstairs to smoke, here's other staff named Mark that was so friendly and hospitable,he grab a chair for me and we had a sensible chat. The two staff are the best!!and I highly recommend them for higher position! They are the best asset in the restaurant,I never had the most wonderful night out here in Shanghai before I only experienced here in Boxing Cat!Great service, good food and one of the Best Beer! Can't wait to see a new branch Boxing cat in the city!

Nice beer, which is a bit pricey considering they don't have the "excuse" of saying it's imported. Food is average - fills a hole, but not much else.

I am a big fan of this place - proper beers, big portions of food at a reasonable price, great location and setting - a group of us got cheeseburger sliders, warm lentil and artichoke salad, country fried chicken - all were great! And the desserts we got - Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch and Red Velvet cake are really really awesome. Their staff are nice people as always, and i am glad to have a great place to make it into a restaurant for great fun, food and beer!

Beer tasted like it was brewed last year, stale. Food was decent, music was retro 90's which is OK with me except lose the Goo Goo Dolls...

Crowd seemed like they were obligated to be there, was a bit uncomfortable. Pay attention to whats on TV too please, German football instead of Champions League at same time?

The red velvet cake is good when it's moist. Maybe they should try this recpie instead: http://www.delish.com/recipes/cooking-recipes/baked-red-hot-velvet-cake-cinnamon-buttercream-recipe

Nice beer, but selection always seem limited. Went there for lunch, only 3 types of beer available. Food is average at best. Nice to have a kids' menu, so my kids ordered the fried chicken. Not bad, a little soggy. My husband and I tried the pulled port sandwich. The pulled pork was not warm, and the bun was the soft chewy type. Service is acceptable.
Probably won't go back for the food, but beer is okay. Happy Hour specials is ok, not the usual Buy 1 get 1, but the beer is 35RMB instead of the usual 45RMB.

I like beer, a lot, but wouldn't come back to BCB for it. I might however be willing to check out the other location, to see if something is lost in transport, as I do like the idea of brew pubs growing in Shanghai. On the positive side, the food was good, except not willing to budge on some extra sauce. Com'n, it's just sauce, I promise not to tell anyone. Owner understands the definition of service, just needs to work on being more genuine about it and teaching the rest of the team. Although assume its only a temporary job for him. Bottom-line: Won't be back unless someone else is paying.

New Eats | Hop Hop Hooray

This Minhang-area restaurant and microbrewery opened a second branch on Fuxing Lu, offering a good selection of American South inspired fare alongside a rotation of artisan beers. So we ordered two of the three beers on tap that day, ¥100 pitchers of the Brewer’s Choice beer (the light but flavorful Hopzilla) and Boxing Cat’s chocolaty stout to accompany a couple of starters.

We shared a plate of the chili fries (¥45), mildly spicy but generously topped with chili and cheese, while we played a quick game of pool, and then further upped our beer intake with a warm loaf of perfectly seasoned beer bread (¥25). We soon sat down for our entrées, beginning with a juicy Californian chicken club sandwich (¥80), served with steak fries and a heaping side of tangy coleslaw, before moving on to the diablo shrimp pasta (¥78). Topped with a Parmesan white wine sauce, clams and scallops, it’s a great dish that manages to stay light despite a touch of peppery chili.

Our favorite, however, was the barbecued pulled pork sandwich (¥75). Tender, succulent and altogether delicious, it was one of the most satisfyingly messy dishes we’ve had in a long while.

Family friendly - kids menu (coloring placemat), great beers and good adult food. We've eaten here 3 times (breakfest too) since they opened and seen a huge improvement with the staff - I think at first they were a bit overwhelmed by the response/need for a great brewery in Puxi, but they open to suggestions. Can't wait to go back!

Its Lee From The Boxing Cat here ~ just wanted to clarify that the Boxing Cat aims to offer 4 beers at any given time, while switching in a new beer every 2-3 weeks for our patrons to try. As the beers are brewed in limited batches and kegged over from our min hang location, we do occasionally sell out of one of the beers and we appreciate the support from our customers in allowing that to happen! Furthermore we try to brew each beer true to its original style and we're always going to provide beers that will be much more flavorful than the commercially water down versions available at your local supermarkets and taps. Its for this reason that we hope everyone can keep enjoying the beer and food we do at the Cat! Thanks for everyone's continued love and support and we'll try to continue to work hard to make every experience a better one.

Jury is still out on this place:

Beer: 10 beers listed but only 4 available and they were down to 3 by 9pm - sounds really dodgy? The Pilsner was really yeasty and we were not impressed with the overpowering Sucker Punch. Is this really the best beer selection in Shanghai? Give me a dry Asahi anytime.

Crowd: Not a place for hot dates. There were rowdy drinking parties, rowdy dice games, rowdy beer-guzzling locals. The staff were seriously-overworked and almost overlooked the leaky ceilings near the LCD TV. Not good.

Food: As good as it can get for pub food. The pulled pork tasted more like honey than pork. The 'slaw was more like stringy rabbit food. And the carrot soup had more broccoli than carrots. Nice beef stew tho.

Hoping it was just a bad night? Would like to give this place and the friendly ABC manager another try if they get their beer selection sorted.

If you are into authentic Texas B-B-Q, this is the place to be! The BBQ Pulled-Pork sandwich is so tender and juicy that it melts right into your mouth, result of patient cooking no doubt. The coleslaw has this original mustard flavor, which, if you like it hot, is a side you must have. Then they have a hamburger slider, which consists of four fresh bite-sized hamburgers, great for sharing among friends. On the evening we were there, the chef had us try out two new kinds of chicken wings, BBQ and Buffalo. The BBQ wings were to die for and I would order off the menu next time I go. The Buffalo wings were so hot that my taste buds went numb for couple hours. If you can't find food hot enough, the Boxing Cat has several menu items that present a fair challenge. And the non-spicy BBQ items are great as well.

Overall, we had a great hearty American meal for about 100RMB per person. And I can't wait to go back.

this place is beautiful. just like cantina it has a good and unpretentious vibe. we have been four times since they are open. love their rubens and the fried maccaroni and cheese are so yum. brunch on sunday was a bit of a letdown. one dish never arrived while the chef was hanging out on the terrace. the fried chorizo dish sounded fab but was not. the jalapenos killed the flavors of the chorizo and the cheap cheese had no taste at all. dishes did not arrive together. fruit platter was lame. maybe that was a one off. i would not mind paying a couple of extra rmb if they would use better bread. service was soso and not even close to their staff in their location out west. two home brewed beers on offer for a brewery??? i guess i'm just being a bitch because i like this place and do not want it to be like so many other mediocre spots - and the other location is just too far away.

50RMB entry fee on 4th July with one plastic cup of beer was not so appealing........... but Carlton J Smith and his crew made up for it all!!!!!!!!! He rocks!

Just went on July 1st to celebrate Canada Day with my staff. The food is absolutely amazing. Try the Diablo Shrimp Pasta and Southern Gumbo. Portions are generous so expect some leftover to take back - gumbo is actually better the day after!!!

I'm not a big beer fan but the home brewed Pilsner was really refreshing. Take advantage of the opening Happy Hour. It's really worth it!!!

I went by on sat for a birthday party. Great quite location with a beautiful lay out. There are 3 stories to this house. Reminds me of a few places back home.

The home brewed brew was actually pretty good. And for 50rmb a pitcher, I was not complaining at all. The finger food they had were pretty tasty as well.

I will be going back for sure.

Boxing Cat Brewery - Fuxing Xi Lu Three levels of wooden floors, comfy seating, casual tunes and some of the best (and only) micro-brewed beer in Shanghai. There’s also a menu of southern American dishes such as pulled pork sandwiches (RMB75) and chicken with biscuits (RMB80) to soak up the brews. Super-attentive staff, led by manager Lee Tseng, make it a place hard to leave.

Come on down to the Boxing Cat. We're a locally brewed American Microbrewery & Restaurant offering Modern American cuisine with Southern Creole influences. Whether it's hanging out on our outdoor patio, having dinner inside or playing pool in our 3rd floor bar, there's something for everyone! We're conveniently located in the French Concession in an old brick house. Come see what everyone is talking about!
