Second Bite | Winter Fresh

New surprises await diners at this popular chain restaurant as unique autumn dishes now appear on the menu amongst long lasting favorites. Autumn offerings include a range of options, from new salads and pastas to grilled Wagyu steak. There's also a new look to evening dining as we found on a recent visit to the Shanghai Centre location. Daytime's stark white tables have been transformed with deep red runners, as well as candlelight and soft music which create an inviting and intimate atmosphere. For a starter, a shared warm spinach salad (RMB46) with caramelized apples, toasted almonds, bacon bits and a light sherry and fennel vinaigrette offered an appetizing combination of sweet, savory and crunchy--a meal in itself. A satisfying mixed seafood and vegetable (RMB68) dish, a new addition to the Asian sets, was loaded with shrimp, mushrooms and salmon cooked in a light oyster sauce with a bite of chili. Also new is a pumpkin penne (RMB58) that was rich, filling and very tasty, though a bit on the monochromatic side--perhaps a more generous garnish of greens could be added for more visual appeal. All in all, we were surprised and impressed by the quality and value of these new dishes. Peggy Rosen

Very good The food here is healthy and filling. The extensive menu of salads and sandwiches are delicious. They also have a whole menu of fresh juice and smoothies. My favorite is breakfast. You can get eggs, hashbrowns, bagels! Definitely find your way here. There are three locations in Shanghai.

Great food We usually have breakfast or brunch here whenever we are in Shanghai. Excellent food and reasonable prices. Good service, can eat inside or out. Highly recommended.

Food at all locations are always consistent and good. However, I think the sandwiches is a bit boring and too much bread. Great salads, especially the Jap prawn salad! Dinner is not as exciting as lunch and I wish there is more variety. Breakfast is good and the items arrive steaming hot as it should be.

Where You Eat

NAME: June Weng PROFESSION: General Manager of Souldancing Studio

Having a lot of dancing on my schedule, there is nothing better to recharge my batteries after a work out of salsa, bellydance or poledancing than with some tasty "energizers." One of my favorite places to relax and unwind is Origin. It's a new place on Taikang Lu and not far from the studio, so I can go there for lunch. It has a very peaceful atmosphere with the woody decor and little lights. Try the ice cream, and the crepe with Nutella. I also like Charmant. They have great Taiwanese style food. I recommend the chicken soup, it's simmered for a very long time and just bursts with flavor. Element Fresh is a bit pricey, but healthy and consistent. Go for the chicken salad or the spicy fish and the great juices.

Convenient location right next to City Shop (after your meal you can stock up on all your American-product needs). The hummus left a lot to be desired, it looked tasty but the flavors were bland and blah. The veggies on side were great and so was the pita bread--so fresh that it was still warm! Yum! The grilled eggplant sandwich with melted Italian diavolino cheese had a nice spicy kick to it and the bread was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, just how it should be.
