A simple décor, creative and high-quality food delight guests with a menu that includes old-time favorites reinterpreted in unique ways-the pumpkin cappuccino soup and the Caesar salad are a break from the ordinary. You can also find grilled meat, burgers and pastas if your bent leans toward more traditional fare.

Located inside the Grand Mercure Baolong Hotel, Café 180 stands out for its creative food and kind staff. We went for dinner on a Saturday evening but the place was not so busy, likely due to its more remote location. Our pumpkin cappuccino with pistachio butter stick (¥35) appetizer was very creamy and topped with hot milk foam, making it look like a real cappuccino. Next we tried a "modern" version of Caesar salad (¥55)–grilled Parmesan rolled around salad leaves with chicken breast, croutons and slices of grapefruit on the side, very tasty. The pesto penne (¥55) was good, but lacked the creative twist of the previous dishes. To close the meal, we chose the yogurt mousse with vanilla coulis (¥38), which was fresh and light but a bit too sweet. Overall, Café 180 is surely going to become a reference in the Hongkou area, but don't forget about the extra 15 percent. –Héléne Franchineau
